Well the language barrier would be hard to overcome in a way that didn't damage the overall product.

Some newspapers are de-facto European, IMO. The Financial Times would probably be the best example.

I'm just back from Austria, Switzerland and Slovakia. I found that the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal and International Herald Tribune are really widespread. I also managed to find the Irish Times in a backstreet in Vienna :P.
Seeing as the German-speaking countries and much of eastern Europe have English as a second language, maybe a real Europe-wide newspaper would be viable.

The European (I still have the first copy I think) was doomed to failure then, now in the internet age its pointless.

You could say the same for any newspaper.

With the advent of decent mobile/handheld devices, with good web browsers, news on the move has never been more accessible. I have shyed away before on the demise of newspapers, but I think there are clear issues ahead. Look at the state of the newspaper industry across the US.

I see on the MediaGrauniad today, that the Prof has said that the ABC is going to have an audit of "bulk" sales, i.e. given away free across a lot of sectors: hotels, airlines, restaurants etc.

If it is found out that there is over reporting of these sales, then the likes of The Independent is goosed.

This might be a topic all of itself...

    How about The European Voice?

It's owned by the Economist Group.

To the OP, what are the useless European wide news websites you refer to?

Europolitics, published in French and English, is another European Affairs daily, I think it's only on the web though.

I think I have seen other European focused newspapers in Brussels, where the demand would be much higher for them.
