Has anyone actually found a good alternative to a wedding cake? We are having our reception in a lovely venue and I am thinking does anyone actually eat the wedding cake? After four courses? I know M & S do them but don't keep them in stock you've to go up north to collect them. Anyone have any ideas? Please??? Anyone??

Are ye going to have other desserts beside wedding cake? You could in theory bake your own, or get a cake made, icing a cake to look like a weding cake is a lot easier than you'd imagine! You could ask at a small family bakery what options they could do, saw profitrols (can't spell) tower, and a modified swiss roll tower at weddings. But t best alternative I saw was a giant cookie-thing, but that was a veeeerrry casual laid back wedding. Extremely tasty though, and easy to make/carry/decorate. ::craves cookies::

    http://www.weddingvendors.com/planning/articles/wedding-cake-alternatives/

My friend got a small fancy cake for the cutting of the cake ceremony and had small mini cakes made(size of a muffin) and put into special cardboard boxes so that even if the guests had no room for the cake after the meal, they could take it with them. Everyone loved it.

Ohhh Scoozis chocolate cake yum! That sounds good, then have a tarte tatin for the dessert? Everyone eats chooclate or apples, you'd be onto a winner! :)

We've decided to go for www.cakebox.ie
Their simply elegant range. Theyre doing smaller versions of classic cakes for under €200. The website tells you exactly how many each cake will feed.

I think you are so right, no one is interested in cake and some can cost up to €1,000! At my brothers wedding he had 5 tiers and the bottom 4 were actually iced styrofoam, it looked amazing, they told no one and no one knew the difference, they had a small fruit cake for the top tier which my sister in laws Mum kept for traditonal reasons ;) good luck!

oh i know, im having an awful time with wedding cakes!

I was at my cousins weddng years ago, and she did something kind of creative. She got a three tiered tray that looked like a wedding cake shape and made cup cakes.....enough for all the guests and places the around the tray. It was a a pretty cool idea, looked great...and was cheap!

the problem with that is that most of the expense of the cake is in the decoration, not the actual cake. Its only about €50 cheaper if you provide the cake or get dummy cakes made.

We are having a small wedding too - I had toyed with the idea of the M&S cake just for show, but have found a local guy who will do three tiers beautifully decorated for €270. it will feed all the meal guests and still be some left over for the evening. the M&S cake was €120 for a sponge or fruit, and you can order online, collect in the north. But then I still required a dessert cos most people don't like fruit cake and sponge was a bit of a non event. Instead I have taken the dessert off the set menu, saving €7 per head, and that money is paying for the price of the cake, so I'm actually saving money! €80 to be exact!
