Hi guys! I am leaving the country for Ozland soon, and is planning to reclaim my tax before leaving. My problem is I haven't a clue about how to go about doing it!

I have been working 1st July 2004. I plan to leave after my contract ends on 30th June 2009.

    My question is:

    1) Can I reclaim my taxes in those 5 years I have been working, or only from Jan - June 2009 ?

    2) Can I get ALL my taxes back ? I mean, I pay around Euro1500 tax every month for the past 5 years. Do I get all these back ?

    3) What sort of forms do I need? Who do I need to contact ?

    4) There are a lot of tax return agencies on the net who claims to help you get your tax back for a small fee? Are they worth it ?

    Thanks!

You can get your own tax back without any help. It is very easy! Also Revenue are there to help so they will assist you if you have any queries.

Each tax year runs from Jan - Dec and are assessed individually for tax purposes therefore the tax you are looking to claim back is from Jan to June. If the correct amount of tax was deducted from you by your employer for previous years then there should be no tax due back to you for those years. However, your employer may not have deducted your tax properly and therefore it is always good to check with Revenue and if see if you are due any tax back. This works both ways however so where you might have over paid tax, you could have also underpaid and Revenue will look for this money (only if it is over 400 euro).

So to check for previous years you ask for a Review for the last four years. You can ring Revenue and request this over the phone. Once they have all your details on file then it will be no problem. They can also tell you there and then if you are due a refund. This is only if you are just an employee and have no other income i.e rental income.

To claim tax back for the current year you have to complete a P50 form. This form must only be submitted four weeks after the date of cessation of your employment and must be accompanied by parts 2 and 3 of your p45. You must apply every four weeks for a refund of your tax. This is due to your weekly tax credits accumlating every four weeks. You will receive a refund every four weeks until the amount due back to you is fully repaid.

    Hope the above helps! :)

Thanks. Do you mean that I have to send in my P50 form every 4 weeks after the 30th of June 2009 ( when my contract ends ?) Surely by that time I would have left the country already and they would know how much I am already taxed and how much tax credits I am due !!

You do not have to keep send in the p50 but u will be issued with a letter from revenue every four weeks that must be signed and dated. If you keep ur address updated with them they can send the letter to ur address in oz. Also. . . If u plan on workin abroad my advise would be not to tell revenue as u will not get any refund until the year is over and they have details of ur income From abroad. U may not intend on working. . . Maybe just travellin . . . If u get my meanin. .
