MMA League Galway 2009 Results

What a day! The first round of MMA League 2009 is in the books and it broke all League records for attendance by miles - 100 fighters took part at the Kingfisher yesterday, our first time in triple figures! The standard was higher, matches were more exciting, FightLord had cool new UFC stuff, loads of new clubs making their competitive début, it was just a fantastic day all around!

Before I list off the results I have to thank an even larger list of people, without whom the event couldn't have happened.
Tim, Ger, Tom and Barry for refereeing and calling it straight down the middle. Being an MMA League referee is one of the hardest jobs going, there WILL be decisions you have to make that teams don't agree with and all the refs yesterday called it as they saw it regardless of the fallout it caused.
Dean, Sean, Darren and Christopher for keeping the event moving 100 fights in 4 hours is no mean feat and its largely down to these men that we got out in time to see some game or other some people told me was on....
Diarmuid for completing the thankless task of updating the results with excellence. He had the job nobody else wanted and did it well.

A very special thanks to all the Point Blank lads who stuck around and helped me tidying up after the event, I really appreciated the help guys thanks!

Lastly and most importantly thanks to the fighters and coaches without whom it would just have been an empty hall. Your continued and renewed support is humbling and I am very grateful.

Our next event is planned for Limerick, but we are having MAJOR scheduling issues with the halls there and there is a possibility that I will have to move round two to Galway. Hopefully this will not be the case, but I will keep you all posted.

Great event, thanks Mark. There should be a load of youtube video's, between the Bish lads and the crowd there was always at least 3 or 4 people recording the fights at any one time. Ill put up the mine and Bobby's soon.

Very good day. Well done to Mark and helpers. As always a very well organised and efficient tournament. I was delighted to see the teens division so well stocked and hopefully that will give some of my other teenage lads a bit of impetus to go in and have a go in the next leg, wherever it is .

It's also nice to see some of the newer clubs to the scene having a go as well. There were a lot of gym names on the list I didn't recognise and that's a welcome thing. On the same note though I think a lot of places would benefit from doing what most of the gyms who would be now called the top gyms did and get some grappling instruction. If you look around the country at the likes of SBG , EFR, Ryano, PBG etc. you'll find that they all had a coach who went and learned grappling from someone very much in the know while or before they were coaching. It would be great to see the level raised in that regard as the non-grapplers really are at a disadvantage in the league.

Great day. It was cool to see the teen division really take off. It was a while since I'd been at a league, can't believe how big its getting. Best new team name surely goes to Team Tom.
