Just wondering if there's anywhere where I could download movies onto a blank DVD? I've seen a couple of sites (American I think) where they have films that are only out in the cinema here available to download for $2.99 and such costs.. would I be able to watch them here? Is that legal to do since they are charging for them..?
Any advice appreciated- again; not looking for pirate films or anything, just nice legal sites if they're out there. :)

Very unlikely that those sites are legal at that price unfortunately.
There's a pretty bad selection of movie download sites for here. America has Itunes and Netflix, both of which have a good selection as I understand. Need to be American to access them though (or get an American Itunes gift card).
Don't think theres any decent ones over here alas.

Had a search around and it seems that the only way you're gonna be able to get films over here online is to download them illegally or buy them on DVD. The latter ensures no fines or prison sentences. :)

If you have an XBox 360, then you can buy films online in HD through Xbox live. The film is then downloaded to your Xbox and you watch it from there.

Since getting movies off my cousin in America I've noticed myself spending even more money on dvds and the like.

The Xbox service is complete rip off. It works to be over €6 to rent a HD film when you buy the points. I'd rather buy a BR player and rent BDs in XtraVision. I'd love to see a movie download service come here but I don't think there is a big enough market for it. If anyone should bring the service it should be Apple, with the popularity of iPods here. Maybe a petition may do the job?

Maybe just keep getting them off our cousins in the US?

Just a note that you can download movies (rental) from Channel 4's 4OD service. Once downloaded, you have 30 days to watch it. Once you start watching, you have something like 24-48 hours before it expires.

They generally don't have "main stream" movies, rather they have an eclectic mix of stuff (lots of stuff from the 1970's and 1980's). The kind of stuff you would see on Channel 4 or TG4 late at night.
...available to download for $2.99 and such costs..

I'm guessing this is rental price.

I suppose the reason there are no proper (i.e. non rental) download services is to do with licensing rights etc. But the major distributors must know they are shooting themselves in the foot by failing to agree on something.

Seems silly that you can d'load movies legally in the US and not anywhere else.
There would definitely be a market for it as when you d'load illegally as it is usually a screener which is s***e quality.

You can rent off iTunes aswell if you register with a US account (by buying a US iTunes gift card on ebay). Easier to download though. The world and his wife does it.

It is a bit strange there is no legal download service this side of the atlantic.

Channel 4 have a service called 4oD but the choice of films is limited.

Sky Player has Rentals too and I'm pretty sure you don't need a Sky Sub. €4.40 for new films. It seems to be the best solution but it is only available on Windows computers.

Don't know where you download from but you can get high quality DVD rips of anything, you can even get HD if you have the bandwidth

I mean that when you d'load a movie that has just recently been released it is nearly always a screener. I'm not condoning illegal downloads btw.

If you can rent (by download) a good quality new release, someone will have ripped that release and uploaded it. I think the new releases to rent must be in line with DVD/BR rentals.

Are you sure your not confusing screener releases with cam releases? Screeners are usually decent enough quality, certaintly not dvd standard but very watchable to most people.

The majority of recently released movies available for download are cam copys, r5's after a month or two at the earliest. Screeners are actually rare enough.
