record avi to dvd recorder

hi, i have some 16:9 avi video files that i am trying to record from my dvd player to my dvd recorder but when i play them back on the recorder they are in 4:3. as best i can tell all my settings are correct. both machines are toshiba what info do i need to give to help get an answer thanks
