South America Itinerary, suggestions??

I'm heading for canada with the USIT under 35 program. So before I start my visa in Canada I'm doing some traveling. As part of the USIT "conditions" I have to have a return flight when entering Canada, so I'm forced to buy a round the world ticket through USIT.

My main objective is to see South America the other destinations will be formalities. So I have 4 months May to August and €3,500 to squander. Does anyone have any suggested routes, where is best to fly in and exit out of whilst maximizing time money and logistics.

I want to see at least 4 countries in this time and I guess BRAZIL, ARGENTINA, BOLIVIA, PERU, CHILE would be all contenders.

To look at a map, flying into Lima in PERU and then traversing through BOLIVIA, BRAZIL, ARGENTINA, CHILE and fly out of Santiago looks like a good itinerary

Any experiences, advice or suggestions that one could share would be very much appreciated.

    Cheers

OK, I'll strat you off ..

Goes without saying that I don't know you but depending on how much experoence you've had outside first world countries I would suggest flying into BUENOs AIRES first - there's still quite a European feel to it which would soften any culture shock, heck I'd go there first just 'cos I loved it when I was there.

You could then get an overnight bus - not as bad as it sounds, book the front seat on the upper deck to make it even more comfortable - up to IGUAZU aka IGUACU (the waterfalls from the "The Mission").

Handily enough this is on the border with Brazil so you could walk over ino country number two ! CURITIBA is an nice non touristy city where you could get a feel for life for normal Brazilian folk.

I didn't particularly like RIO but I guess you can't not go there. Unless you want to see what a megalopolis is like I'd skip Sao Paolo. Perhaps head up to the beaches in SALVADOR DE BAHIA.

Now we're moving out side my area of experience but I'd fly into Peru work down thro' Bolivia and into Chile. If you wanted to start and finish in the same place go all the way donw to the bottom of CHile and cross bewteen the Patagonias and finish off in BA again ...
