online vintage clothing store

Hello, I'm looking to start an vintage retail store. The early phase of my business would be starting to sell online, most likely through eBay. Does anyone here have experience starting an online business? and or selling items on eBay? Any tips would be helpful.

I'll mostly be buying my product from thrift stores, estate sales, flea markets, and sometimes from eBay and other vintage stores when I find a kick ass deal. I don't know much about fabric and the history of fashion (I just know I LOVE vintage clothing), so I plan on taking a fashion merchandising program, which educates you on fabric, history of fashion trends and many more valuable things. When it comes closer to the time to opening my vintage 'lifestyle' store (where I would sell mens/womens clothing, hand picked antique furniture (mostly mid century/art deco) and other vintage knickknacks for the home) I plan on taking a small-business program at the local college. I already know I have a passion for all things vintage, I just need to back that up with more solid knowledge.

Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, your opinions on my vintage 'lifestyle' store idea would be great.

    Thanks!:)

Ebay is a good starting point for non-bulky items. However getting your first sales is hard. You may need to sell initially at a loss to get over your 'new' status. Depends on whether there's much competition. One advantage you have is no-one really knows the value of the items as they can't direct compare on other websites.
Get friends to buy from you. Take their money via Paypal and then give it back to them by cheque. You just suffer the ebay fees in order to create a track record.
Maybe you could also sell at weekends from a stall somewhere to generate revenue and feedback. If you are sure you're going to sell on the web, get a simple website now and put some products on it and direct them to ebay for purchases. This will give you search engine visibility long before you sell directly online. Get friends on facebook/bebo etc to link to your site.
Important: be patient, it takes time (unless you have shedloads of money).

You need to be selling really specialised/niche stuff to make decent money on ebay.

Are you the lad that posted about setting a non-online shop a few weeks ago? You might be interested in these guys:

They have 2 shops in edinburgh adn they're always heaving. I've been in it a few times but never bought anything, it's pretty expensive. No idea where they get their stock from but they go thru a serious amount by the looks of things.

    Best of luck anyway
