Learner Permit Number

Hi all - silly question here.

I've been into the motor tax office today to sort out my learners permit, but it won't be posted out to me until next week.

In the mean time I've been looking online at various insurance sites for a decent quote. A lot of the web forms ask me for my learner permit / driver license number in order to complete the process and give me a quote.

Is the number that's on your receipt when you pay for the permit( a nine digit number titled as a reference number) the number they're looking for? Or do you thinks thats something completely different?

I'm not looking to buy insurance before I have my physical permit, I'm just trying to get an idea of what sort of deal I can get.

    Thanks

try phoning some insurance companies and get quotes over the phone...... they'll prob be able to bypass the learner permit number part.

Just put in a number like 0000000000000 when getting quotes.

Make sure you redo the quote from scratch when you get the permit and want to take out the insurance.

Yeah I think that should. If you're stopped by the Guards while getting a licence renewed the receipt is valid proof that you have a driving licence. Even though it's only a slip of paper it should contain your licence number, date, amount you have paid & a government date stamp.
As regards insurance Axa are the best I've dealt with, most companies are expensive to start off with but they give the best cover.
Theres a company in the Donegal called Britton insurance. Get a quote off them & you might be able to haggle a bit with other insurance companies. They are way cheaper but usually when I have an insurance renewal I shop around & go to Axa with a quote from the cheapest & see what they can do for me.
They may not match it but they do provide excellent cover & service.
A lot of companies charge a fee of around €30 if you need to switch you're insurance onto a different car on a temporary basis but Axa don't charge for this service. Handy if you break down & you need to use someone elses car for a few days.

    Thanks for the replies

Yeah I knew that about being able to produce your receipt in absence of the actual license, but I think I'll hold off anyway just in case :D

I've been ringing around also. I got a good quote off Aaron Insurance, and I'll probably be going for it but I'm always open to other recommendations!

    Thanks again

I checked online for insurance quotes as well, and I had to put in a number plate, so I am just going to ring them instead, as I dont have a car yet, I want to price different makes of cars.

Each number can be traced back to the issuing athority, 26 is wexford, 21 carlow, 11 wicklow etc. These are the first 2 numbers of your driver number and the insurance company might use these to find out a bit more secretly, or maybe im being cynical!?

I doubt it as the licence holder will retain this number for all subsequent Learner Permits and Driving Licences but may have moved to another part of the country.
