40 gig PS3, but only 14gb space?

How much HDD space does the PS3's OS take?

I've got a 40gb, and it has about 14 gb of space. Okay, I know it works out when I add the space the games' files takes up, but I still end up with 28gb.

Where did the other 9gb go?

14GB/37 GB is what it says at the moment..

did you download home, that sets aside 3gigs
    so you've 14 used of 37+3=40 i'm merely guessing

No, I just deleted it. It was gathering pixie dust (lol)

I have 14 free now. If I deleted the game files, it'd be 28gb free. That's still 9gb short of what I SHOULD have, get me?:)

The PS3 reserves a certain size for itself.
    Count yourself lucky :)
On 500Gb drives it reserves nearly 40GB for the system.

    Videos. Musics. Photos?

    3 GB per 40 GB.

And BTW, i think the 37 insteadof 40 I'd to do with the makers not putting 1024btyes in kilobyte, or 1024 KB in 1 MB. Its because of them putting in 1000.

Yeah, it's the same with pretty much every memory unit, even USB keys. They hardly ever have the exact amount of memory it says it has

    very simple to work out

    1Gb=1024MB
    So 39GB= approx 40GB.
You lose more as the drive gets bigger.
In the ops case though this is not the issue.
It's the PS3 reserving additional space for it's OS.

The ps3 does not reserve hard drive space

Only about 465 GB shows up instead of 500 GB Because computer system bases everything on the power of 2's. Therefore, by Computer Science definition, 1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 GB = 1024 MB.

    1 GB equals 1,073,741,824 bytes.

When buying a 500 GB hard drive you should be geting 536,870,912,000 bytes. But the hard drive manufacturers rip us of by giving us a drive 500,000,000,000 bytes and calling it a 500 GB drive.

The "missing memory" is the space reserved by the PS3 for its software updates.

These come pretty much every 2 or so months and vary in content but that's why the memory is lower than you expect.

You can always buy a larger HDD from ebay or play.com but make sure its the right size i.e 2.5" NOT 3.5" or else it won't fit. It doesn't really matter what rpm it runs at either as the differences between them are minuscule.

It's totally worth your while to upgrade your HDD, as soon you will discover that the memory starts to decrease faster and faster, especially if you put movies, music and photos on it.

@ OP: Perhaps you reserved some space for Linux?
