Bought it this morning and it wont stop crashing the PS3, just freezes about 30 seconds later ps3 resets itself, but instead of going to sony splash screen the power light on the ps3 stays flashing red, I have to physically turn it off and on again to get the ps3 to work again

    Anyone else having this prob

I was playing KZ2 on my 60GB PS3 all night last night with no issues. Was there any symptoms of a possible problem before you played KZ2? It is possible though that the PS3 overheated seeing as KZ2 doesn't install to the HDD and instead runs entirely from the disc.

    Sympathies anyway.

mine freezes an awful lot when i load resistance 2 or uncharted so i always have to turn off and on..why would they charge you if its not your fault?

This problem is not due to KZ2 - you just happened to have that game in when it happened. This is the same laser issue people report, and it happens with various games...

Unfortunately that is wrong, the console has had no problems since i bought it since launch, nothing has ever gone wrong with it, I buy Killzone 2 today and bam console dies, coincidence i think not

to the poster who asked why would they charge, the guy on the phone said it was out of warranty

How long have you had the console. EU law says electronics have a 2 year warranty, regardless what the manufacturers say... apparently.

Lets see 60gb check, killzone 2 check, plays perfectly check....

Its your console, not the game

Most people have no problem, until it breaks. Mine had no problem until I put in Oblivion (which I had played before), and it just stopped reading disks. Was it Oblivion? No, the Bluray drive packed in.

Will it read disks? What some of the other posts are alluding to here is the Blu-ray of death, which has been covered by Sony out of warranty (for me and others). There isn't a 2 year warranty by the way, in the strict sense, but if you can prove a known defect within 6 years you have a case. This is why Sony are sorting out the BR of death on the QT, I would imagine. If your machine won't read disks at all, search this forum for "death" and you'll find contact numbers, stories about it etc. Then ask Sony why they won't fix yours when there is an obvious problem, especially when they have fixed others out of warranty.

    Ignoring that

Since launch day in ireland whenever that was i gave the serial number of console to agent in sony and he said it would be classed as out of warranty

I played it for a few hours last night on my Launch day 60Gb without any problems.

To white rebel, the console was able to read the disks before this happened, ergo when i power up the console now the power light goes green then yellow for a sec then just stays flashing red, no boot screen or anything so i can only assume if i could get to the xmb to load disks it would do so

24th March 2007 i remember because i got mine the 27th:p..that would mean you still have warranty..so the agents talking BS..you should try hold down the power button to boot it up

Playing fine on my launch day 60gb console. Sounds like you got really unlucky with the timing etc.

It's a crappy thing to happen, but it's not the games fault. If you'd bought any other game today the same thing probably would've happened.

I know - you don't seem to with me when I say that all of them were able to work before something happened to them. In MOST instances it seems its the BR drive failing, which they seem to be fixing no problem, out of warranty. The red light is a different matter, and from what I have seen, Sony don't seem to be addressing.
If you have a look through the Biz>consumer >consumer issues forum, you can read up on what you are entitled to under warranty. I have done, and its messy, it is not a straight forward 2 year warranty. If it was, why would every company in the EU offer only a year?

It's not necessarily EU "law" per se because Ireland has not signed up to that idea. If you want to force a company to abide by the 2 year rules set by the EU you first have to sue the Irish government

    Cheers, I wasn't exactly sure.

We're not signed up because our Sales of Goods and Supply of Services act is better. Ours doesn't put a 2 year time limit. IIRC you could argue that 1 year is not the intended life span for a console.

Also OP, contact the store you bought it from. Explain the Sales of Goods and Supply of services act. If they refuse to help, you take them to small claims court.

ps. If you post in consumer affairs forum you'll get better info on what steps to take.

my launch day console bought on the 23rd march 07 stopped reading disks last july and sony wouldnt replace it without me forking out €250 for a refurb. i mentioned the two year gurantee to sony but they stated it didnt apply in ireland:(. Then a mate of mine who bought the console at the same time as me in the same store got his ps3 replaced in october 08 with the same fault. So i got on to xtravision and they then replaced the console that they refused in july because of a "change in policy". Id say to keep hounding sony till they give in is the best option

thx for all the suggestions guys, im going to wait and see what the sony e-mail says, he said id get one within 2-3 days, ive also put feelers out to these guys

    http://consolerepairsireland.ie/

to see if they can help, dunno if they can fix the error but no harm in asking, as for the shop i would ask but i have a problem i have everything that was in he box but i cannot find the receipt for the console, been 2 years so god knows where it is tbh

might be worth asking over in the xbox section (as lots of people there have had returns issues) about this but i seem to remember the woman from consumer affairs saying that electronic goods sold in ireland are covered for 3 years.

Im not sure about this but I would defo check with consumer affairs a 1 year warranty is rubbish

Here is the EU act in question: 1994/44EC
    http://eur-lex.europa.eu/smartapi/cgi/sga_doc?smartapi!celexapi!prod!CELEXnumdoc&lg=EN&numdoc=31999L0044&model=guichett

However, Ireland bypassed the EU directive due to the Sale of Good Act in conjunction with the Statue of Limitations which is the act which specifically allows Irish citizens to enjoy up to 6 years cover by virtue of the fact a citizen has up to 6 years from date of purchase to prove a fault with goods. However whether you will actually get a replacement or repair after 1,2,3,4,5 or 6 years will all depend on whether the judge thinks this qualified as a reasonable period of time.

Edit - Just saw Gummy said the the same thing above more or less.
