Total Recall .... to be Redone?

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Total Recall" is totally coming back.

Producer Neal H. Moritz and his Original Films banner are in final negotiations with Columbia Pictures to develop and produce a contemporary version of "Total Recall," the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action movie directed by Paul Verhoeven.

The original, based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," follows a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.

The movie explores one of Dick's favorite topics, reality vs. delusion, never spelling out for audiences whether the story was a dream. The movie grossed a very real $261 million worldwide.

Carolco was behind the original movie, which was distributed by TriStar. Harvey and Bob Weinstein's Dimension Films picked up the rights for a reported $3.15 million with the aim of developing a sequel. Columbia secured the rights from Miramax, which retained them when the Weinsteins left to start their own company.

Calling Dick's story "prescient," Moritz said he hoped the advancements in technology and state-of-the-art visual effects can help tell the "Recall" story in a fresh way.

So, Arnie's flick is, of course, an absolute classic. No arguments there.

But how does it compare to Dick's original story? (assuming some of ye have read it, which I haven't). Do the two differ so greatly that perhaps a remake could offer something new by doing a more true adaption to the source? Or is Arnie's version already a true adaption of the original story?

Anyways, other bad news is that producer Neal H. Moritz seems to have a penchant for getting involved in some box-office turkeys over the years.

Read the short story a few years ago, and one things for certain: there were far fewer breasts.

The original is one of the best action films ever imo. It is in my top 20 films. To be honest I wouldn't like to see it being remade. But if they want to try then its up to them to better the original. Haven't read the book but might after this to see how different it is. I would hope that they will add something new to it. It will be interesting to see who they will cast in the lead.

They could easily take the basis of the story and come up with a completely different film. The original only really takes the first twist of the short story, so that leaves another two to mess around with. Sure, there's no stopping it now, so I guess we'll see how it comes out. :)

I just hope they don't f**k up and put Mark Wahlberg in it, like they did with Planet of the Apes. Which didn't need a remake either.

If they can double the hooker then I'll go see it. Imagine 6 of them!

They've got a pretty broad canvas to draw on here, so I wouldn't automatically rule this one out just yet - they could easily do a very different take on it. I'm thinking of something along the lines of Minority Report in style.

Yeah short story was more of a thriller than an action movie, and I'm pretty sure they didn't even go back to Mars to blow **** up (open to correction there). I think a lot of the adaptations of Dick's novels have been dramatically different to the originals (with the exception of a Scanner Darkly, and I'd love to see that oft-rumoured Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep remake if it stuck to the book) so I wouldn't judge anything at this early stage until it takes some sort of direction.

Also: they need to make a version of Ubik, which is just fantastic.

Actually Minority Report was supossed to be the sequel of Total Recall and was called Total Recall 2 in the original script. Arnie probably made them change the name once he heard that Tom Cruise was involved.
