Tax a car early

Can you tax your car early? As in could I tax my car today for March (being sunday)

I'm wondering because I've got a new car and I was hoping to tax it today, not to leave it sitting in the drive all weekend. And it's a bit of a waste to tax it from the start of February. I searched a bit online but could only find rules about England, saying you can do it there, 2 days before the month starts.

    Anyone have an idea?

    Cheers
    -Mark

If the date you bought the car is in Feb you are liable for tax in Feb.

My dad once bought a car on the 29th Feb (and didnt pick it up until about 7PM) and had to pay Febs tax.

If you tax it now you will pay the whole month of Feb.
You may get away with it - say your waiting on the log book or something similar...

Cheers for the quick replies guys!

I think I'll chance it first, just give in the form and don't ask anything, but if they get stroppy I'll just change it to February, I need the car for the weekend really 'cause I'm parting ways with my old one.

    Thanks for the help,
    -Mark

Dodgy advice there EPM. Your Dad had to pay tax. But since the OP has yet to drive his car at all this month, then he does not owe tax for this month. And please don't go into a 101 questions about how did he get it home etc...

Just tax it on Monday and enjoy the weekend. If anyones asks, tell them the truth but don't act smug about it. Also put a note where your tax should be, stating you just bought the car. I sometimes feel better when I do that.

Cheers BlackWizard, Sound good to me. I only got the VLC in the post yesterday, so that'll back up my case if anyone asks between now and monday.

Monday sounds good, takes the if's and buts out of the whole thing!

If TheElf does that he'll have to get it signed off the road from the date of purchase (today I presume) to Sunday / Monday. Means a trip to the Garda station before heading to the tax office (or posting).

Yup! The Gardai do not mind this at all. Mine was off the road for 3 weeks. No questions asked.

There is a space at the back of one of the forms for Garda stamp and dates for when the car was off the road.

I think he could try get it stamped on the weekend. ( Don't see why he couldn't  ) I usually get mine done on the same day Im taxing.

How is it dodgy? If you buy a car with no tax in Feb, the date on receipt will be the month you pay the tax from. Just because the car hasn't been driven by the OP makes no odds in that situation. The tax office will see it as out of tax from the last renewal date but the receipt should cover you if its a long period. This is if the car is dealer bought obviously.

Getting the guards to sign the form is different as that is the OP saying it was off the road and not touched up to then but with a new car like the OP says it was registered in Feb therefore needs taxing.

I brought my car through at the very end of the month, queued for half an hour at the tax office on the first day of the following month only to be told I needed to get the form stamped by the Gardaí to say the car was off the road for 1 day. I nearly pulled him over the counter.

Just incase you are wondering, the car was moved to my house a couple of months back before I actually bought it, and it was taxed.

It was aimed at Blackwizard, not your individual case tbh.

Although tbf if a gard stops you at the weekend he might see it as beign on the road too.

How long is the tax out btw? If its a few months out or you dont have a disc up at all, you might meet a Gard in an impounding mood should you get stopped.

Why didn't you bring the car through a day later? The law is very clear. If you register a car in a particular month, you have to pay motor tax for the whole month. So whether you bring the car through on the 1st of February or the 28th of February, you pay the tax from the 1st of February. Just as EPM said.

Just back from the tax office, taxed it from the start of Feb. I said I'd give away the couple of euro for this month, rather than take the risk, or hassle over the weekend.

I had to go away for the weekend, so I wanted to have it before the dealer sold it, a previous dealer had let me down, I didn't want it to happen again. I know you have to get it stamped whether its a day or a 100 days off the road, its just infuriating. I was trying to give them €1150 and they wouldn't take it, just a head wrecker.

There was no problem taxing the car, you just didn't want to pay for the extra month.

    I never said I didn't. :)

Who'd pay €96 for driving one day?

Someone who didn't get the form stamped.;)

When I told the Guard that they made me come up to get it stamped for 1 day, he just shook his head. Ah well. Tax is up in May, I started saving in December...

Im in a similar situation myself. Ive a deal all set, swapping cars with the dealer on Sunday so the car will be sold to me on Sunday the 1st March. Given that its a Sunday and I wont be able to Tax it on a Sunday, am I allowed drive it on the Sunday and pay for March tax the next day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Technically you're not allowed drive the car on public roads if it isn't taxed. But no Garda would do you over one day, just keep the reciept with you on Sunday for the off chance you do get stopped.
