I'm heading up myself - a few of are leaving Laragh at 10 hitting Wicklow gap, Slieve Mann and Shay Elliot - if you pass someone collapsed in a boards jersey do say hello...

I would be up for something early tomorrow ... 9AM sounds good even if Dundrum ... the weather is expected to turn later in the day ... so best to be back by 2PM in my reckoning.

Me coming from D15 ... so can others going from this direction at Pope's cross once we nail down the time.

Blorg cycles so fast that he can travel through time .. its only when he slows to talk to us mere mortals that he gets delayed.

I have to be back early (or get divorced), so I will be leaving park at say 8.15 ish.

Thinking of a route along the following lines:
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Castleknock&daddr=stocking+lane+dublin+to:Enniskerry+to:Sraghmore+to:Kippure+to:Glencree+to:Terenure+to:Phoenix+Park&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&dirflg=ht&sll=53.308211,-6.298685&sspn=0.018565,0.059052&ie=UTF8&ll=53.239743,-6.264267&spn=0.074379,0.236206&t=p&z=12

5 climbs, Stocking Lane, Long Hill/Djouce, Lugalla, Sally Gap, and stocking lane from Glencree direction.
I felt good (relative term) climbing last week, so I want to try bust a gut this w/e, and test was it a one of, or have I found my climbing wings!!!!

In, if you're passing through Dundrum.
    Early is good for me.

Given the time of the race, time it take to go in and out of Dundrum ( about 2hrs off the spin time ) I think I will opt out of the spin and do a 3 hour spin including hill repeats around my side of the city. Which should actually be better training for me. Intensity > Lengh of spin
I was in WW on wednesday for a century already...

The race isn't on till 1:30 or so. I'm planning on being back in loads of time.

Left house 8AM ... drenched 8:05AM .. decided to head back ... rain stops ... turn towards Dundrum ... downpour once again 10mins later .. soaking wet and cold as a hot shower looked tempting at this stage .. decide to do a few climbs along lower liffey road ... by 9:30 .... gorgeous sunshine ... :(

Hope the weather held out for you guys ... by the time I was coming back, it looked lovely ... 55kms and 800mts of climb all along the Liffey. Now I have profiles of every one of them .. Knockmaroon hill, Stocking lane, Rugged lane, tinker's hill, the one up Laraghcon ... and the old road down on the other side of Laraghcon .. must post them up sometime.

Any of the non-racing crew doing a spin tomorrow ..

There was a tiny bit of rain at times but at other times the sun came out. Nice enough day though.

Passed blorg I think and other people I assume are boardsies around the bottom of Lough Bray (obviously not passed, they were going up it and I was going down with my companion). Odd, I never used to see anyone around and that's two in two spins (over two weeks).

We were wondering who you were Dónal (I am presuming you were the one in the Boards jersey) :) Good spin, El Tonto, The Claw, ROK_ON, a very fast canoist whose handle I am not sure of, and Scott.

I brought them up Stepaside Lane towards Johnny Foxes, I think that was a new one for most :D The usual way up is closed. We then headed on up to the viewing point, Sally Gap, Lugalla, Roundwood by the road tonto hates and emty loves and then back home via Djouce. A bit over 80km for me. Scott was itching to go on to Laragh and do Sally Gap again but I wanted to take it somewhat easy as racing tomorrow.

Oh, had a bit of drama as my handlebars suddenly slipped forward while braking coming down into Enniskerry. Clamp bolts were completely loose. Is this a particular risk with carbon bars? I tightened the bolts with a torque key to the recommended 5Nm, and I thought that was pretty tight. Glad it happened today and not tomorrow I guess. Was a fair bit of shaky stuff today.

Wowsers, scary stuff. A bit o loctite on bolts maybe.

    Hi.

Good spin. That was some climb soming out of Stepaside, thought I was a goner. Had to dismount halfway up - (apologies to Tonto who was just behind me).
However, it was a very enjoyable climb, and will be attempted again asap.
Was happy that I made it up Kilakee from the other direction.
90km on the nose for me, and made it home in time (sort of).

Thank you for waiting for me this morning, and a big thank you to those (Blorg/Tonto) who did hill repeats back to me on the climbs. Gentlemen. Pints are owed.

It may not seem it, but feeling progressively stonger after each of these spins- no longer afraid of the climbs, and recovery is quicker.

On another note, weather was good today, I am hoping that this is the final week this year that the fleece lined winter gear is worn.:)

Sorry to miss the group this morning-had a bit of a sore head and was even grumpier than usual :p.Headed out later up to Sally Gap and on to Laragh via Glenmacnass,a fair headwind all the way.Went back to SG by Lough Dan and home up over Bothernabreena,Stayed dry the whole way but cool enough at times, was glad of my hat :)

Yes -- cool spin guys. Thanks good company and not too much effort. Made it home on time so Suzanne was happy. More kms needed now only 120 for me today.

    Sill dreaming of Laragh

I have some paste suitable for preventing carbon parts slipping. You are welcome to a blob of it if you wish.

It was really weird. Its wasn't the bars slipping that was the problem the bolts on the stem had become very very loose. Blog said hey had been tightened with a torque meter so its really weird the would have come loose. I never check mine?

Has anyone else had bolts on the stem work them selves loose

Yes the bolts had become very loose. I had tightened with a pre-set Ritchey Torqkey and to be honest if I was doing it without I don't think I would have tightened more, I felt they were quite secure. I have been riding over a few bumpy surfaces lately and last checked the torque on them a month or so ago I guess.

A list of things that came loose today (I'm not making this up!!!); the chain came off the rear cogs 3 times, the stem was loose (so handle bars rotated downwards), the front derailer nearly came off completely as a screw was literally ready to fall out! Never had such an unlucky day with things on the bike going wrong!

I've a theory though! The bike is currently left inside and the heating has been on every night during recently, so a cycle of heating (at night) and cooling (morning/day) could loosen the bolts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,509 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

If your bolts are coming loose then more than likely its because they are not properly preloaded. Blorg's case is odd because he says he set them to the required 5Nm load, I guess maybe some thread locker would be handy.
