My PC died on the me other night for no apparant reason so I reinstalled the whole system as I didn't have back up discs (didn't lose much stuff so its no problem). When I reinstalled XP, I couldn't connect to the internet with a wired connection and when I attached my wireless dongle it would recognise it, but it wouldn't work and as I couldn't connect to the net I couldn't update the drivers for it. There is a laptop and a Wii which both connect fine to the router (wirelessly) but I cannot connect the desktop to the net. When I set the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties to Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically I am told there is limited or no connectivity and ipconfig tells me I have no Default Gateway. I have called tech support for my ISP but they told me there was nothing they could do about it as the system is connected

Anyone got any help for this problem?

    Thanks

OK I'm presuming you're trying to use the wired connection as the wireless dongle isn't recognised?

    1) Ensure DHCP is turned on in the router.

    2) Update the network card drivers. As you've reinstalled XP make sure you've no Network Controllers needing drivers in Device Manager. If you do, google for drivers for your PC brand/model

    3) Don't expect help from your ISP when it comes to PCs, their responsibility is to the primary telephone point connecting your house to their network and the router if it's supplied by them. This isn't a criticism, just the way it is.

Post back if you've any more probs

    Thanks for the reply.

How do I turn on DHCP on the router? The router I have is a Telsey from Magnet Broadband

On a PC/laptop with internet access, type ipconfig /all at a command prompt. Look for the entry "DHCP Enabled", if it says yes then DHCP is already running on the router and we need go no further. If not read on.

At the command prompt from above, look for the entry "default gateway". Type the IP address of the default gateway into the address bar of your browser. If you're asked for a username/password, have a look at the user manual for the router, it should be in there. If not Google it! AFAIK those Telsey routers are locked down quite severely but search through the configuration pages for anything relating to DHCP.

ok I've done that on the laptop with internet access and I obtained this (there is a lot more info but I've edited it down)

Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection

    DHCP Enabled.......................Yes

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    DHCP Enabled.......................Yes

Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection *6:

    DHCP Enabled.......................No

Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection *9:

    DHCP Enabled.......................No

Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection *10:

    DHCP Enabled.......................No

Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection *11:

    DHCP Enabled.......................No

The IP address of the default gateway in the address bar gave me nothing

OK DHCP is enabled on the router, gotta look elsewhere for the answer. Are all the drivers for the network controllers installed in Device Manager (Control Panel->System->Hardware Tab->Device Manager)?

Are you sure the wired network ethernet adaptor has drivers installed?

Under the device manager I went to Network Adaptors and under that I found

    1394 Net Adaptor
SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adaptor

Under properties for both of them, it says the device is working fine. As I can't connect to the net with that PC, I can't update the drivers (if needed)

Looks like its installed alrite, do try downloading the updated drivers on the other machine, copy them onto a usb or whatever and install them

OK so your network card drivers are installed. Have you another network cable you can use, just wanna rule out any probs there?

ok I got the driver update for the SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adaptor and its installed but I've still got 'limited or no connectivity'. I don't have another cable to check but I'm pretty sure this one is ok

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 karmeliet

oh by the way, I couldn't find the 1394 driver, but it shows as connected anyway.

Can I connect through that somehow?

OK so we know DHCP is enabled on the router and drivers are installed for the network card. Try the following:

Assign a static IP address to the network card. It will have to be in the same range as the router i.e. if the router is 192.168.1.254 then give the PC an ip address of 192.168.1.100 (subnet mask should auto fill). default gateway is the IP address of the router, Primary DNS will also be the IP address of the router

Disable the Windows firewall on the network card and at a command prompt type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew. If you get a network connection then it means the firewall was blocking DHCP offers from the router, something I've only ever seen once tbh.

Can you try pinging 127.0.0.1 from a command prompt? If you get ping replies then your TCP/IP stack is working correctly. If not run the following command at the command prompt(assuming your XP installation is SP2 or greater): netsh winsock reset catalog

If none of the above don't work then I'm all out of ideas! Unless anyone else has something else to suggest, I'd say a new network card may be in order.

No, the i394 connection is the FireWire connection for connecting external devices to your PC. USB 2.0 is more commonly used for this though.

Not being smart but it's in the same place where you did this, from your OP:
When I set the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties to Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically

ah right yeah. What I meant was how to find the routers IP address. Would that have to be obtained from the laptop where I have internet access?

Yep, when you did an ipconfig earlier it was the default gateway address that I asked you to type into your browser address bar. Hope it works....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 karmeliet

ok I've done that. It now says its connected on the Network Connections window, but when I try to go to google its still not connecting.

The Default Gateway's last digit was 1...I've tried a few numbers such as 0, 2 & 10. Am I doing this correctly?

No, don't change the default gateways last digit, leave it at 1. So a static IP address hasn't worked, try my other suggestions and post back

in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties I have set the following

IP address - same as Default Gateway (taken from laptop with internet connection)
Subnet Mask - filled in automatically
Default Gateway - taken from laptop with internet connection

Preferred DNS server - same as Default Gateway (taken from laptop with internet connection)
    Alternate DNS server - blank

I tried the ping to 127.0.0.1 and it sent 4 packets and received 4 packets

The ipconfirg/release and ipconfig/renew didn't work 'The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissable for this operation'

Thanks for all your help so far by the way:)

Yeah that can only happen on adapters set to obtain an IP address "automagically":). Did you try disabling the windows firewall, setting the network card to obtain it's IP address automatically then running the ipconfig /release and /renew commands?

Thanks for all your help so far by the way:)

No problem, nothing like a bit of Tech Support to keep my unemployed brain active!

the firewall was disabled all along as I thought that might help. I have tried obatining the IP address automatically and performing the ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew and I'm still getting 'limited or no connectivity':(

Try running the "netsh winsock reset catalog" command (minus the quotes) at a command prompt. Even though your TCP/IP stack is working it may yet resolve your problem. Reboot and test

Try uninstalling the SiS network adapter by right-clicking on it in Device Manager and selecting uninstall. Reboot and test. Windows should detect the adapter and install it as the drivers are already on the system.

If those don't work then I'm afraid my only other suggestion is to try a new network card.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 karmeliet

tried both of those. When I uninstalled the SiS Network adapter and then restarted the balloon in the bottom right of the screen says new hardware found, however its now not showing on the Network Connections window, all thats there is the 1394 connection (which is still connected)

would it be ppossible to borrow a network card from someone and use that to get the driivers for my wireless dongle as I won't be using the wired connection if at all possible. Are there compatability issues?

OK is the SiS network adapter appearing in Device Manager?

yes. I tried to disable it, then reenable it but still no joy..'limited or no connectivity'

In Device Manager, right click on the SiS adapter, select properties. Click on the Advanced tab. Look down through the list for Speed & Duplex (might just be Duplex on its own). Highlight this and in the right hand window change the value from Auto to 100Mbps Full Duplex

Does restarting the router or connecting the network cable to a different port on the router make any difference?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 karmeliet

Under the advanced tab, there are two options - MediaType, & NetworkAddress.

    MediaType gives the following options

    100BaseTX
    100BaseTXFull_Duplex (already selected)
    10BaseT
    10BaseT Full_Duplex
    Auto_Config

NetworkAddress has two tick box options

    Value (which is empty)
    Not Present (which is selected)

I have tried the old turning off then on again routine with the router and tried all 4 output ports but without any success

Try changing it to Auto_Config. I'm afraid if that don't work then I've no more options to try. Time for a new network card. When you said in your OP that your PC died all of a sudden, any idea what caused it? Just thinking the issue with the network card may be symptomatic of a failing motherboard

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20 karmeliet

I tried the auot setting and its still the same:(

I dunno why it died like that. Its always shut down by itself every now and then but it always rebooted no problem (sometimes it would check the discs or something before logging on) but I have no idea why it was different this time (I didn't kick it too hard during FM09 I hope...)

New PC for me I suppose

you have this wrong here. you say you have the ip address set the same as the default gateway ip address? this is wrong. if your gateway address is something like 192.168.0.1, then set the ip address as 192.168.0.100.
If the ip address is something like 192.168.1.1, set the ipaddress as 192.168.1.100. Make sure the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0

I'm a bit confused now. The default subnet mask is 255.0.0.0, and you say set it to 255.255.255.0. The subnet mask on the laptop that is connected to the net is 255.255.252.0.

By the way, should I post the ip address and the default gateway to make things a bit easier or is that a no-no?

255.0.0.0. is ok. yeah post the ip address and gateway addresses. they are internal network addresses, and are not visible on the internet, only your routers external ip address is visible.

ok so. these are from the laptop which has access to the internet

    Subnet Mask - 255.255.252.0
    IPv4 address - 87.198.16.90

Ok, try the following manual settings on the computer that isn't working:
    IPv4 address: 87.198.16.100

    Default gateway: 87.198.16.1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 400 ✭✭quaidox

yeah set the dns server to the same as that of the laptop.
can you click on start --> run, type in cmd and press enter, then type in ping 87.198.16.1 and press enter. do you get any "reply from...." messages??

hmm, that means that tcp/ip is working on your pc, so havent really got any more suggestions after this....
i think you should reinstall xp, and then put anti-virus software on it while it is offline and make sure it is up to date and then connect directly to the router via ethernet cable and see if internet acces is restored.......sorry i can't offer any more help on this....
