I need your help and advise please, thank you in advance

I have purchased my car from UK back to two years ago and got a RF001 form but with no logbook. and i paid my VRT in SEP 09, because my work is local plus their is a computer error on the car, so I never bother to fix it and just leave it at home, so i never paid my tax. but i have moved recently. and I feel i need to drive it now. in this case do i need to pay the back tax? a friend of mine told me there's no point to go Gardas because they will only give me hassle.

anyone knows what should i pay my tax but without need to pay back tax and in this kind of situation, can i tranfer the onwer ship to my wife and ask her to pay the tax on my behalf?

    thank you guys.

you won't get a logbook till you tax it. you'll need to get it signed off the road.

You got the car two years ago and never drove it (tax doesn't just cover when you drive to work)? That surprises me, but then again I am impressed with your time travel skills so anything is possible.

if VRT was paid in Sept, you would've got a form to tax the car, even if you put your wifes details on the form now, you're still liable for the back tax.

If the car was not used in a public place for a particular calendar month or more (parked on the public road is 'used' in this regard afaik) you do not have to pay the back tax for that period.

there's some computer problems with it, I got this car off one of friend in kent, got a great deal, around half the price here?so i rather keep it till when i use it than leave it.

You complete the section of the motor tax renewal form where you state that the car was not used in a public place for the relevant period, then go to a Garda station where you sign and date the form in the presence of a Garda. The Garda then signs and stamps the form to indicate that he has witnessed your signature. Witnessing your signnature allows the Garda to give evidence to that effect if it is found later that you have made a false declaration and you are being prosecuted for this offence. The Garda may ask you about the car being off the road, but does not have to, and most don't.
