    Hey all,

This is starting to annoy me as of late. I am using Portable Apps on my USB key for college etc. But when i am downloading files on my browser etc i will set the directory (to somewhere on the usb key) but the Drive letter assignment changes most times i put the key back in so i have to change the directory to this new location.

Im just wondering is their any way to fix the letter assignment or anything that could solve this problem.

    Thanks
    Niall

    Plug in your USB key
Right click My Computer and select Manage
    Select Disk Management
Right click the drive letter that represents your USB and select Change Drive Letter and Paths
Select the leter you want to use (not one currently assigned) and click ok.
This should bind that drive letter to your USB from now on.

    Great!
Thanks you very much. I changed it to X with the idea that X would rairly be used by any other drive.

Hopefully this will work. Thanks you again for your help.

I always use "U" for usb key, "V" for my virtual dvd drive, "S" for my storage partion and "X,Y and Z" for my mapped network storage :p

My point being, its a good idea to assign them what You, not Windows decides

I just realized, this will only work on the computer i set this on right? As doing this on college computers is not an option due to user restrictions and all user data being cleared after logging out.

With that problem in mind, their is no way of permanently setting the letter of the drive no?

unfortunately not (that I'm aware of at least), as any drive you pick could be in use on the computer you end up using, which would obviously cause conflicts.

    Thats unfortunate.
Thanks for the help anyway, at least it will remain the same on my home computer.

a little scripting helps all.... you can write a quick batch script to set a copying folder on your desktop or something with a script inside to copy back over to the disk. You (afaik) can grab the current drive letter in a batch script and alter the script in the folder. You can write it in anything really and add it as an autorun function so you pop in your stick auto run it and then save everything to the desktop. Once done just double click the script beside the folder and presto.
Of course you could be more creative with your methods and even more so with perhaps a different language.
Someone with similar interests to you (although i think that this will only work on computers you install this on prior to sticking your stick in)

I didn't read fully so it may just be proof of concept or an snippet of how it WOULD work
