Fair play to Jean-Claude Trichet, head honcho over in the ECB.

Came in and gave us a bit of a boost, said it wouldn't be easy but when the cloud lifts we should be ok.

Said Ireland would be in good nick when the shídt clears.

Those kind of things are important, good man Jean-Claude.

Beats the fcuk out of all the bad news.

Anyone who thinks they can con the public and avoid reality can go and fcuk off.

    Let's get real

    That's a possibility.

    Hope it's true though.

whatever happened to the wall of cash that eddie hobbs was talking about

edit:have you got a source for what he said

whatever happened to the wall of cash that eddie hobbs was talking about

    Didn't hear about that.

Seems a lot of the "cash" in this country was of the ether variety.

However ,be that as it may, a vote of confidence from JCT is, to me anyway, a step forward, and I take a bit of confidence in his statements.

All it needs now is the fookers in charge to take a good grip on the reins and drive the country through to better times.

Strikes and sabre rattling by the Unions wont help, and that well respected doyen of economics Dr. Garret Fitzgerald says we need a emergency budget rapido.

    I agree .

But if, miracles of miraces, we did pull though and there was a second Celtic tiger: would you have faith in the governemnt (or public for that matter) NOT to fvck things up again...?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

    Jesus no.

Hopefully people would have learned their lesson.

60% of tax income coming from the same industry.... Jaysus:eek:

What happens if that goes wallop.... it did!!!

    I am optimistic.

There never was a Celtic Tiger, it was just borrowed money, now that the money has dried up we are in sh!t. The only way things will improve is if the ECB lends up a sh!tload of money again, then when that money dries up we'll be in the sh!t again. Sadly Ireland never was and never will be a rich nation, Ireland lived its best years on borrowed money.

I'm another poor soul that thought it was about the legendary Van Damme, only to find another economy thread

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,575 ✭✭✭✭FlutterinBantam

To a certain extent there is a grain of truth in that.

We traded in non manufacturing goods and relied on an unsustainable construction and property industry to a what I would call a criminal extent.

We splashed out and maxed out our credit based on the premise that things would continue as they were.

:eek:They didn't , and we found ourselves in the shoooite.

We have been beaten senseless for the past few months so Jean Claude's note of cautious optimism is to be welcomed.

Think you maybe a bit over-optimistic. Note the hint in the last paragraph of what he said.http://www.rte.ie/business/2009/0226/ecb.html

We can't even get the public sector to take a small pension levy as they are on strike, hardly convincing so far! ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,575 ✭✭✭✭FlutterinBantam

I agree with you on that.

If the populace can't see that a pensions levy on Public Service workers is not a fair and equitable start, then we are all fcuked.

These people get guaranteed jobs, guaranteed index linked pensions.

I really cannot understand the union attitude, well I can actually, they have to go through the motions.

However I'm quite sure, that whatever the cause and whoever caused it,Ireland Inc. is faced with at least a three year term of fiscal excoriating and a lot of real pain.

all he's concerned about is lisbon - boost the feel good factor in ireland and boost the odds of a yes vote.

put it this way, the man has "full confidence" in the present government.

    enough said.

You're unlikely to find a 1 euro coin on "the sidewalk", because if you are walking on "the sidewalk" that would mean you are in AMERICA.

Might be interested in giving confidence to a member of the Euro and the EU and avoiding what happened to Latvia, a fellow member.

I think a currency and economic depression is more important than Lisbon.

Lads, Jean-Claude Trichet is the President of the European Central Bank which is based in Frankfurt. The ECB don't give a **** about Lisbon.

The ECB don't give a **** about Lisbon.

YEP, Lisbon has nothing to do with the ECB.

I'd say he is more interested in keeping his job and the Euro not failing or collapsing.

Politicians and self interest and all that.

Damage control, basically. Remember, he's the head of the ECB, not some pissy little Irish bank. He's obviously going to try to smooth things over as best he can.
....have u been out of the country or off planet Earth altogether? You gonna give any proof he's not pushing a European agenda?

I don't have to. You made the claim that it's a ploy to rouse support for Lisbon, so it falls to you to prove that claim.

Head of ECB - concerned about the collapse of his currency or F-in lisbon

He may be trying to falsely raise optimism -though I believe him- however it would be for much more serious matters than F-in Lisbon.

Aslo if that was the case why not say we are in the crappper totally, more of a reason for us to stay close to Europe

What a surprise. I had expected him to say we were ****ed.
He is gunning for the mass appeasement placebo effect AKA self-fulfilling prophecy. Build up consumer confidence by a promise that is backed by nothing except an authoritative statement. Obviously there is enough people to fall for this cow dung as there was when Brian was being bullish on Q+A prior to the last election about Fianna Fail being the party to manage any downturn.

I have to admit I was surprised at Trichet's comments when he made them. Maybe he had a few Guinness before saying it?
