    There will be.

PS4 isn't that far away. Sony have confirmed it.

3-4 yrs IMO. PS4 won't launch until 2012 IMO. The world economy has put end to any companies attempt at an early launch.

I'm calling bull**** on sony saying that the PS3 will out last the 360. When the new 360 comes around Sony are going to have to have something to counter it or face losing an even bigger share of the market.

The PS4 won't be out for another 3-4years I would say..I think PS3 will keep going for another 7 or 8 years as Sony stated it was going to be a 10year console...I can't see how they can make the PS4 any better though apart from bigger hard-drive smaller case and all the other necessaries!!

theres a few years left anyway until the next generation kicks off properly, sony and ms are probably still not making money off their hardware are they? theyre probably in no rush to invest a whole lot more money into releasing new consoles.
Microsoft have problably learnt their lesson about rushing out a console early from the RROD too .

Id be interested to see what they can do to advance their consoles. Nintendo might come out with wii 2 before ms and sony invest enough cash in another launch.

I think 2012 at the earliest. I think that developers for the HD consoles are having enough trouble making games as it is right now, ~3 years into the generation, without having to start the process all over again in 2-3 years.

The Xbox 3 and the PS4 are either a long way off to keep developers happy (think how much money they're loosing on their big projects) or the Xbox 3 and PS4 will be more like the transition between GameCube and Wii - it'll keep developers happy as the architecture will be quite similar to the systems available now but will be a bit more powerful and cheaper to manufacture. Like a PS3.5, not PS4.

This all assumes that how 360/PS3 games are developed does not change over the next few years. As it stands it takes too many people too much time and money to release a product that may not necessarily turn a profit.

    posted yesterday on maxconsole
Sony not so sure of a 10 year life span for PS3
    dot_clear.gif
It has been shouted from many a roof top that the PS3 will have 10 year lifespan, but Sony has finally shown some doubt about this. Speaking in an interview, David Reeves he noted that he is not sure of the lifespan, indicating that it could even be just 8 years.

    quote:

During an interview in an upcoming issue of Play magazine, Reeves said Nintendo and Microsoft will have new models on the market before Sony would, but that he doesn't know whether the PS3's lifespan will be "eight, nine, or ten years."

"The competition will have new models on the market by the end of the PS3," commented Reeves. "I have no doubt and we’ll have to be fast on our feet.....I don’t know whether the PS3 lifespan will be eight, nine or ten years"

Well of course its on the cards. Another console is inevitable. The PS3 is in its ealy days yet I reckon. It's got at least another three years left.

I would imagine that's a typo in fairness.

As for a PS4, I would imagine it's in development but they're not going to launch or even hint at it for another 1.5/2 years. The PS3 is only starting to churn out it's AAA exclusives now!

On top of that, there isn't a whole lot to do as far as advances go, without crippling gamers with a heavy cost of hardware. Developers are finding it difficult to produce games with costs constantly going up etc.

Well the ps3 only has 256MB of ram and the rsx only has 256MB dedicated and performance wise is comparable to a nVidia 7800. That's a piss poor amount of ram and the 7800 is an old card. Both of these would need an upgrade for the PS4.

This is true if you're trying to develop for masses of hardware differenciations, but because there's only ONE hardware config (however great or low) developers can make the most of that hardware.

It's unfair to say 256mb dedicated on a graphics card is low when everyone has the same card. It means developers can use it properly, whereas PC developers have to be sloppy and rely on higher specs to drive performance.

True but more vram will allow it to use larger textures which would definitely help games improve visuals especially at 1080p. Anyways I'm not really critising the ps3 as such, I was merely pointing out that the ps4 does need more than just a bigger hard drive like warzone was saying. It needs a ram and gpu upgrade as well. A new console in a couple of years time with only a slight improvement in the gpu would be pretty bad especially if graphics were part of the marketing push (like sony and microsoft will probably focus on).

I imagine that the PS3 will be around for quite a while yet. Who could afford to spend megabucks on a new playstation these days? And the PS4 will undoubtedly cost megabucks :(
