Landscapes of desire: parks, colonialism and
identity in Victorian and Edwardian Ireland

    Research Assistant Position
    UCD School of Archaeology

A Research Assistant is sought for a 15 week period to work on ‘Landscapes of desire: parks, colonialism and identity in Victorian and Edwardian Ireland’, a research project funded by the Heritage Council (Archaeology Grant Scheme 2009) and based in UCD School of Archaeology.

This project forms the first part of a phased program of research exploring the role of public parks in shaping class, gender and colonial identities in nineteenth and early twentieth century Ireland. It will provide the first synthesis and assessment of surviving architectural, monumental and landscape features of these historic landscapes, focusing on parks in Dublin and Belfast. This work will result in the production of a formal report including a comprehensive catalogue of surviving features, an assessment of the scale, character and research potential of this historic resource and
a detailed strategy setting out future research directions.

The Research Assistant will work under the direction of the Project Leader, Dr Joanna Brück. Candidates for the position must have a postgraduate degree in Archaeology. A good knowledge of historical archaeology and experience in recording 18th or 19th century architecture and/or monuments in their landscape context are essential. Candidates should have very good research skills, an ability to work independently to a tight schedule, and experience in writing and editing reports. Familiarity with Microsoft
    Access is also desirable.

The appointment may begin on 1st of May 2009. The project will be managed by Dr. Joanna Brück and the UCD School of Archaeology. The gross salary for the 15 week period will be €9,520 (€33,002 annual equivalent inclusive of mandatory employee pension contribution of 5%). Please note that although the job is based in Dublin, some time will be spent in Belfast, and travel and accommodation provision will be made for this.

Further details available from Joanna Brück (joanna.bruck@ucd.ie).

Applicants should forward a full CV and covering letter outlining their suitability for the position to: Dr Joanna Brück, UCD School of Archaeology, Newman Building, University College Dublin, Belfield Dublin 4. Candidates may be called to interview.

Closing date for application is Friday, 27th of March 2008.
