    Hi

I am looking to get a bike for Gael Force West (www.gaelforcewest.ie) race this year. Can anyone recommend a good bike / tires for this event. The race will be on trail and roads. Budget 700 euro max

    Predictable suggestion from me.

10% over budget, which isn't bad for the boards.

Looking at the event description, a road bike would be fast on the road sections but pretty miserable on the off road while a mtb would slow you down on the road.

I'd say a Cyclocross bike would be the best compromise (and useful after the event too). Here's a few...

Have just noticed that CSS are doing the Giant TCX 2.0 for €660.

That's the best-priced cross bike I've seen, and from a proper Irish bike shop :)

Tiagra is supposed to have better clearance than 105 too...

Over your budget slightly but this is a very nice bike. Illegal in UCI-sanctioned cross races but I presume this won't be a major issue for you :)

Hi, as mentioned above I would probably go for the Giant TCX 1 (Although the TCX 2 looks unbelievable here!) or else the Focus Mares Disc. The disc brakes might be of a benefit to you, although it doesn't look to technical (it could be muddy though!) Good luck ;)

That's a bargain at €865, considering that the rim-braked 09 Mares is €1,000. It's all the bike you'll ever need.

I have the '08 version (with rim brakes) and can confirm that it eats pads in mucky conditions.
