Nice sandwich but the bloke avoided any explanation whatsoever about why I was paying over the odds.

    I did of course inquire.

In the end just paid for the sandwich.
I guess that makes me a fool.

WTF you talking about Poland for ?

This rant is about a sandwich.

Maybe a toasted triple-decker chicken sandwich is more expensive than a normal chicken sandwich.

Why do people still eat in o'briens. I dont think ive ever had a nice sandwich there.

Did you say yup when asked about the toasting and stuff, without asking if it was extra (take it from me, if it was free, they wouldnt try to sell it to ya) Not saying youre a fool, its an easy mistake to make, and ty for the heads up. I dare say a few others wont be caught out now.

Cos you made a point of typing in a polski accent maybe?

The O'Briens near me have a sign outside for some chicken ciabatta thing. Priced €3.50.
Then, in little tiny writing underneath that (written in pen and very faint) it says €4.95 eat in.

Not eaten in O'briens in ages. They were always messing up my order, plus they jacked up the prices too much. Their coffee is pure mank too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,513 ✭✭✭Sleipnir

Well you paid the princely sum of €1 towards the cost of toasting the bread. Never went back there after they charged me that.

    Feck O'Briens!

    Go to Subway!!!!

Footlong BMT and large coffee :D and maybe a bag of crisps or cookie.

Especially good if you get em to put everything on it! (at no extra cost)

and toasted (at no extra cost)

with cheese (at no extra cost)

    Riv

O'Briens have a problem at present - but its not the fault of the individual branches. O'Briens charge an annual fee to all franchisees + charge them 9% of all their sales. They also restrict franchisees from offering any offers outside general offers decided by head office.

The sales patter for O'briens doesn't help them at all. They insist that staff ask each customer if they want the sandwich toasted. - They neglect to tell the customer that this adds €1 - €1.50 to the price as it becomes a vatable item @13.5% + they add a few cent for the toasting.

Eating a sanwich on the premises is also vatable @ 13.5%, that's why there is no difference in price between a eat in cold sandwich & an eat in toatsed sandwich.

Cold sandwiches for takeaway are zero rated for vat.

If O'briens simply put up a notice giving the explanation above it would save a lot of negative comment.

You "people" who eat sandwiches get a grip on yourselves and go and buy some proper food. How many poxy sandwiches can you make for 7 quid, and they wont be sitting in a warm shop all day having people slobber and cough all over the ingredients.

    That's €1 extra in O'Brien's too.

    "Would you like that toasted?"
    "Yes please"
    "Slobber and cough ingredients?"
    "Oh yes"

O'Briens sandwiches are nice I reckon. And what are you complaining about - that you were stupid and paid for a sandwich you didn't order? Unless they were falsely advertising a normal chicken sandwich for 3.50 you have nothing to complain about. It sounds to me like you ordered a toasted triple decker chicken sandwish in which case you got charged accordingly

They should be upfront and say that toasting costs €1 or whatever extra.

Whenever I see all the people in O Briens I just shake my head in sympathy....

I have not eaten in O'Briens for about 2 years , they are such a rip off as to be un-real.

The business I work in used to use them for sandwiches/cakes when we ran meetings etc, however after we complained a few times about the cakes being raw ( uncooked ) , or stale , they still delivered total cack to us once too often ... so now our business goes elsewhere .

went into O'Briens on Abbey Street and ordered a toasted ham and cheese sandwich and a bag of crisps for takeaway. This cost €6, never again. Will recommend going to Tea Time Express on Talbot St for a fresh roll made up at half the price.

    To clarify, this is nothing to do with Poland or anywhere. I was emphasising a point. it is ;

    1. I asked for the blackboard special offer of a chicken sandwich for 3.50 which I pointed at.

    2. The bloke serving me couldn't speak English much at all.

    3. I don't know where he was from. It could have been Mars. It doesn't matter.

    4. I couldn't understand his questions. It was very frustrating.

    5. I ended up with a toasted tripledecker that I didn't order.

    6. It cost a lot more than 3.50

    7. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't clear up the situation.

    8. I paid up.

Here, the Londis on top of Dawson street is top dollar. This week they have chicken roll and wedges for 2.50! Last week it was BLT for 1.80! Quality stuff, been living off it the last couple of weeks.

And that's where you went wrong.

Personally, the Trippledecker (not toasted) is the greatest sandwich ever, and I don't think I've ever been charged more than €4.70 for one. Considering you'd pay €4 for a role in a spar, €4.70 is reasonable for such a tasty sarnie.

Why in the name of holy bollox do they charge €1.00 for toasting a sandwich? Electricity costs?!

You should have told em to stuff it, I would have, if enough people did this O Briens wouldn't be long rectifying this issue, in fact im half tempted to go along and ask for one myself

Because people are stupid enough to pay it !!

Indeed they are. Also another thing is that people in Ireland are very slow to challenge and complain about this type of behaviour. It is typically Irish as many would say.

I hear that alot of obriens have closed recently - athy, nenagh, longford and prob alot more. When you consider the rent and the franchise fee along with all other costs, obriens will suffer over the next year. Plenty for sale - tralee, mullingar, carlow and kilkenny.

But this is not unique to O'Brien's, every fast food resturant tries to sell you more than you first asked for. "Do you want Fries with that" is the standard mantra in McDonalds.

So not really a rip-off just good sales on a customer who was not paying attention.

Well, the sandwich does not jump on the toaster all by itself...

And the cost of buying and maintaining the equipement.

Why dont O Briens charge one single price for a sandwich. I know all about the vat - eat in , eat out , hot and cold. Charge 1 price, then no one can complain. If a standard sandwich is 3.95 take away and 4.90 eat in, charge 4.50!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 137 ✭✭coopersgreen

I'd rather eat a sandwich made by Josef Fritzl from the afterbirth of one of his incest babies than eat an O'Brien's sandwich.

If you really have to ask this question then may I suggest that you never open your own business.

???? Look, the issue here is the price and impression that OBriens rip off their customers. If they charge an universal price then no one can complain!

    True,

I was in one last week. They wanted to charge €2 for a bottle of "O'Briens" water. €2 for a bottle of tapwater!

That was the first time I was in them in years and now I'm done with them. Greed pure greed, I'll watch them go down the tubes.
