Taxing car without log book?

    Hi everyone,
Sorry if this is in the wrong place! I need some advice Re: taxing my car!!

Basically I have a car which i imported from the uk, I have VRT'd it and the logbook was sent out to me in the post! Fast forward a couple of months, I still haven't taxed the car, due to laziness mostly! :o
I got stopped by the gardaí last night and I have 10 days to tax my car or the guard said he will come up to my house himself and take it if it's not taxed!!
So, I went to get my logbook and I can't find it anywhere!! I tried calling the dept of transport this morning and they're closed because they are on strike or something!!!
I basically need to know if there is any way of taxing my car without the logbook? Any help appreciated, thanks! :)

Could you may be mistaken about them sending you out the logbook after you VRT'd it? I believe they do not send out the logbook until the car is taxed first. You need to fill out a form to tax the car for the first time in the country. This is probably what the VRT gave you. Tax the car with this and then you will get the logbook for future taxing.

Actually, I don't ever remember receiving the log book but assumed I must have gotten one and lost it!! :o
Thanks a million, I will have to search for that form later! If I don't have it, do you know where I can get another one? :)

I think Dermo123's right, you get an RF100 with the reg and the pin on it when you VRT the car, the VLC only gets sent out once you've taxed it.

My VLC arrived a couple of days after I vrt'd the car. Think I only taxed it the day before it arived.

You can tax new cars online with the reg and last six digits of the cars VIN, not too sure if it's the same for imports but can't see why not. But you may not get the disk within 10 days.

I paid my tax online on Sunday and had the disc on Tuesday so they seem to be pretty quick at the moment....

ya, you can do it online. last 6 digits of your chassis no is your pin.
You'll have to pay your back tax though. No sympathy for that though.

Thanks charliecroker, didn't know about that!

Couldn't you not just fill out a motor tax renewal form? You'll have to pay the months you missed though,https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/RF100A_en.pdf

like one of the replies earlier.....i brought in a car from the uk but you have to tax the car first b4 u get the log book back.....the vrt receipt is what u need to tax it.....then when its paid they post it to ur home address

No need to tax the car for the past months. Just go to a garda station, fill the form spot where it says you have not used your car between x and y (Before getting caught by the Garda) and you will not pay the arear.

which is a false declaration, so i wouldnt advise it.

also as far as i know u might not be able to do it online because its a while out of date. think 2 months is the limit. this is the case with previously taxed cars, not sure about an import being taxed for the 1st time, they might use the date of importation instead.
