    Hi all

I would like to get some opinions from you all regarding a 3 wood and or driver to get. At the moment I am playing with a mixed bag of starter clubs and middle and bottom of the road wedges and hybrids. I am happy to stick with the irons, wedges etc but think I might benefit from a more modern driver / 3 wood with more forgiveness etc

Brief background would be that I have always liked and played golf but up until the last 12 months I couldn’t hit the ball out of my way. I had some lessons last March and since then I have steadily improved, both through playing semi regularly and by spending time at the driving range. I started off playing the usual public courses and scoring about 100 - 110 per round. I am now scoring in the 84 - 90 consistently. (84 being the best score, with it usually by closer to

Lately I am happy with what’s happening from 110 yds into and around the green. I generally don’t have many 3+ putts and have become more and more consistent chipping and pitching from around the edge of the green.

I use a 3 wood from the tee and can hit it approx 220 yds but inconsistently. I think the inconsistencies come when the shots are not off the face.

So finally my question.... are there any improver clubs that people would recommend that will help me get more consistent from the tee and eventually lead to better scoring?

Any help appreciated, many thanks in advance.

have a look at a rescue club maybe around 19/20 degree loft, should get it out around 200y maybe less this time of year if your hitting 3w 230

also useful off fairway and light rough

Three clubs in your bag that you should be completely comfortable with

    Driver / Wedge (s) / Putter

My recommendation would be to go for a driver in the Ping range.. look for one with regular shaft and a loft of about 11 / 11.5 degrees...the G2 / G5 and G10 are the current ones.

You should be able to pick up a second hand one of these at very reasonable prices.

Wiil be difficult at first if you are not used to the large headed drivers but stick with it......ball needs to be teed up a little higher than normal...give her a bit o range time an you should be OK.

    Good luck

I'd say there are very few 18 h'cappers comfortable with all three of Driver, wedge and putter, and if they were, they likely wouldn't be off 18 for long.

OP, the larger headed drivers can be very forgiving, and to make life as easy as possible you might look for a driver with a 12* or 13* loft, doesn't really matter what brand once there's a decent shaft in it. As suggested, Ping are fine, as are any number of other brands.
If you can go somewhere to try clubs out all the better

Thanks lads. I had a look on the ping website and there is a webfit application that you can put your details into and it gives you a list of ping clubs to suit your height, swing, hand size etc. It gave me ping g10 or rapture v2 driver with a 12* or 13.5* loft and regular shafts. Goes through all clubs down to putter. Worth looking at if you were to buy blind without going to a pro-shop to be fitted.

    http://www.pinggolf.com/fitting/webfit.aspx

Will take a trip to one of the shops and see about trying a few demo clubs and then keep an eye on golfbidder, adverts and ebay etc for a 2nd hand one

Yeah to be honest, I wouldn't worry too much about the Ping fitting site. Custom fitting is beneficial but doing it online is a bit like online dating. Your perfect match on-paper will invariably end up hacking you to death and leaving you in the boot of the car.

There's lots and lots of value to be had in the s/h driver market because the models are "revamped" so frequently. Have a look on the reputable online stores and post links to anything you like the look of. Posters here will help you sort the good bargains from the potential axe-murderers.

Thanks Sheet, who knew online dating could be so dangerous!

The driver and 3 wood I have at the moment came as part of the starter set bought in the US about 4/5 years ago. The driver is a 9* and I really struggle to get any sort of height on it even when hit "well" so hence the move to 3 wood. If there are 14 fairways to hit in a round I'd probably hit 7/8 with it though not necessarily where I was aiming for!

Looking around I really like the look of this Taylormade. Its probably just the shape that appeals to me. Although this one is closer to the shape of my own 3 wood which I dont hate! McGuirks also have what looks like a good deal on a Ping G5 driver 12* and 5 wood for E120 and as before the shape of the G5 and G10 range seems to be close to what I'm used to.

Obviously I know I'll have to try a few before I buy but all your pointers and experience are much appreciated...

I am looking at Mizuno MX-560, I know it makes a loud noise. Any Ideas.
