Maths help AH style

Right there has to be someone to help me here, I'd post in maths again but imagine I'll be waiting a while and I haven't the time.

Lets say I've 2^3. Gives me 8. To work back the original number I get the cube root which brings me back to 2.

If I've 2^4. Gives me 16. To work back to original number I sq.root it twice bringing me back to 2.

Now if I've 2^5 it gives me 32. How the hell do I work back to 2? It's bugging the **** out of me.

What is '^'?

I'm pretty sure the answer is 'x' though.... could be 'y'.

Drop the 3 or if you prefer divide by 16...
