difference between penalty points and an endorsment

    I was reading unregged's thread about his incident with the guards and followed a link to citzens advice about driving penalties. Is there a difference between an endorsement and penalty points and how they are recorded and how they are viewed by the insurance companies?

    Endorsement = comments physically stored on your licence / driver file; generally given for dangerous driving; will usually lead to an insurance loading

    Points = marks towards temporarily losing your licence, given for lots of things, low amounts rarely bother an insurance firm.

    On endorsement also stays on your licence for either 5 or 10 yrs. Cant remember which but nearly sure its 5

    Endorsement stays on your licence for 3 years. It is mandatory for some driving offences.
