I'm currently not in college, Im 22. I work in a petrol station shop. Going back to college in Sept. Due to this thing known as the recession, the owner is cutting back hours. Im currently on minimum wage and it seems that I will only be getting 2 days of work a week.
Mates of mine is in the same boat and he has signed on for the other three days. The man in question is uncontactable (otherwise I'd ask him), so can anyone tell me how I would go about this.
Is it true you have to queue at the central office every Thursday?
    Thanks for any replies.

You should still be able to claim money. I don't know what you mean about the central office. You have to sign on once a month at your local welfare office and pick up your money once a week in the post office.

You wont qualify as a mature student unfortunately though..

If you did you could work your couple hours, get grant, and draw dole and get book allowance also!..

    Oh well ..

under the casual employment scheme, you can claim dole for the days you are not working. Your boss will have to write a letter stating why he can't give you more hours, and every week he will have to fill out a slip that you hand into the dole office of the days you worked, and they will pay you the others. I got it and was bouncing 2 nights.

And how much roughly were you getting? I may now only be down to one day, which could be as little as 7 hours. I need to keep the job though because its handy for college next year and there will be hours in the summer.

The dole is about €204 / 5 = €41 per day so if you work one day you should get 4 days benefit, so about €161. you can also try and get it back dated. I think I got mine backdated 2 weeks. Its pretty rare that it happens I think. Will be back on the dole on Wednesday so say hi to me in the Q!!

So you sign on in the central office. Then you have to go in once a month, but each week you collect from a post office?

You don't sign on. Every month they post out four little yellow forms. These are rectangular pages that have each day of the week on them (you mark the days you did and didn't work, and get your boss to sign it).

You have to go to the welfare place each week and drop in your little yellow form. In Drogheda there's a letterbox outside the building, so you don't actually even have to go in, not sure how it works elsewhere (I'd assume they're all the same).

Each week your money will be sent to the bank/post office (i think you get a choice).

Its a pain to set up, but pretty straight forward once done.

Are you living with your parents?

Because I signed on just 2 wks ago and I'm 23 and living at home so because of that it was means tested.
You'll be asked for parents payslips proof etc.

I am living at home yeah. How long after your means test were you receiving?

I applied 1/2 weeks ago and still have no word back, and my local office is one of the few offices with a shorter waiting time! So I expect word back in hopefully no more than week. I'll let you know exactly how long when I get word back, but like i said it depends on the backlog in your local office apparently.
