Failed module question.

Bah, so I failed a module from last semester with 33%, due to assignments I'd imagine.

Would I have to repeat the exam/module, or do I have any other options?

I'm not sure how 'Passing by compensation' works?

I'm in the same boat, I think it depends on the course too.

if your doing a degree, compinsation can be gotten from a mark of 25% upwards. ye could still pass by compinsation but i'd say still try and get a real good mark in the rest of your stuff to make sure your able to compensate.!!

If your doing a masters, in order to receive compinsation, you must get over 35%, so between 35 and 40 percent.

Yeh once you get over 25% you can compensate by getting an average of over 40%. Only at the subject level though. You can't cross compensate.

Can you cross compensate in CSSE ??

I have no idea. If CSSE is just considered one subject then you probably can.

If it was an exam you can repeat, if it was just assignments you're screwed unless you can comp.

This is from the marks policy thingy:
Some programmes (such as CSSE and Electronic Engineering) are single subject programmes
What does that mean ??? This is just way too confusing :o

That means you can compensate across all your modules. So if you get an average from all your modules of 40% any modules were you got between 25% and 39% won't matter. If you got less or the module is compulsory (i.e. you must get 40%) then you'd have to repeat the specific modules.

hey ro, i did that in 1st year too!! You should be grand as long as you have 25% in all of the other modules! Go see the dept but it will say it on the student services bit on the nuim website I think!

Fair play to ya thanks :D I should be safe enough then. Still can't understand why they make us do two science subjects. I'm terrible at physics yet I'm having no bother with the computer related stuff

How's the Maths going? CSSE students generally have huge difficulty with it. More so in 2nd year though.

No huge problems with it so far, I did higher level for the LC so its quite similiar. Its just the two extra science subjects that are bogging me down :(

You're made do two science subjects so that if at the end of first year you don't like computer science (you thought it was going to be different) you can transfer out into a general science degree and keep the other subjects you were doing.

It also gives you a bit of 3rd level experience in those other subjects, which is a nice foundation.

You only have to pass the other subjects by compensation, but you definitely have to properly pass your CS modules. CSSE isn't treated as a single subject in first year since it's pretty much just a general science degree.

Then again, the standard for first year science subjects is really quite low, basically just a leaving cert catch up since people are able to start any of the subjects from scratch without having studied them before.

If you want grinds in Maths, Computer Science, Mathematical Physics or Experimental Physics send me a PM, I did them all last year and still have my notes.

I knew I would like computer science, I also knew i wouldn't like the science subjects !! I didn't do any science subjects at LC level and I wasn't that freat at JC science. Only for all the maths thats in them I would really be in trouble. For me the science subjects are a huge disadvantage because I want to do something in computers so I don't think I ever would transfer.

Having done extra subject modules at 3rd level, in any subject, is an advantage. Everyone was sour about it in my year since we were the first year it was introduced, but that's the course, and you chose it. After finishing it I'm kinda glad I had to do the extra subjects. The results you get in first year don't affect your overall degree result either, so no worries about that. Its just about adding up credits.

Yeah you're probably right, it would have been nice to do more computer related modules though, I'm only doing two at the moment  apart from maths of course.
