We have users on our network that we want to prevent using office 2000 or or 2003 (unlicenced software) We as administrators can remotely access their hard drives, whats the best way to prevent office (outlook in paticular) running.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but why not just uninstall it and then take away their admin rights so they can't reinstall it? That's presuming you've already sent a mail saying "you're using that illegally, please get rid of it or we'll do it for you".

Warning from IT, followed by threat of action from HR / business head, followed by removal of admin access. Sounds like a bit of a free for all in your place though - is there a dedicated IT dept. at all?

They are in a remote office , we can get to their default share but rdt is disabled on their pcs, so we cannot remote on

Yeah, I agree that this seems like the best way to do it. This keeps them from installing random programs and stops a good deal, although not all, of spyware/maleware.

Sounds like that is an issue that you should address.

If they're in Ireland, send someone from your office down there for a day or so to setup up RDT access, uninstall Office, and change the admin passwords.

If they're out of Ireland, think about hiring a local contractor for a few days to do the same thing - just make sure he gives you the admin passwords :)

i agree with above posts but you could change ntfs permissions on outlook files so that no one can use the files.

Use GPO - prevent the relevant .exe files from being executed. If you don't have AD then you can apply local policies on each PC. But you will need to remove their local admin rights. And if rdp is disabled then you need to send someone over there to sort it all out. I agree with the above comment that it does sound like a free for all.

Enable Remote Desktop, emmm, remotely? I assume you can access their registries remotely also as you can access the default share?

You can use the computer managment/AD tools to connect to their machine and change the Admin rights from there...

Othere option is if you are able to connect to the default windows share, you can drop a .bat file or a piece of VB script to remove the software.

I found this on another site:
Go to this key in the registry

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\"PRODUCTNAME OR GUID"\UninstallString

If it is an msi installation the key should look something like

    MsiExec.exe /I{6E740973-8E71-42F9-A910-C18452E60450}

to get it to uninstall change the /I to /X. if you want it to be hidden ad the /qn to the end

    ex. MsiExec.exe /X{6E740973-8E71-42F9-A910-C18452E60450} /qn

Create a batch file using that command.
