Edinburgh Marathon

I have registered for the Edinburgh marathon in may with the goal off getting sub 3hour. I'm doing the half marathon in Connemara, what would be a good time indicator for the half marathon, to realize that I'm on track for sub 3hour.

I would say about 1hr 20mins would be fair enough. But i haven't run the edinburgh marathon but have been there and it is a hilly city.

Fastest marathon in the UK or something apparently...people cut, on average, 11 minutes from their pbs according to their race literature.

Having done both, I'd say a 1:30 half in Connemara would leave you in good stead for a sub-3 in Edinburgh.

It's all guess work as everyone is different, but Connemara has a few decent hills, whereas the only thing resembling a hill in Edinburgh is the best part of the first 2 km being downhill. The Edinburgh course is boring and, after the first 2/3 km, absolutely flat. Last year you had a headwind for the entire 2nd half though which cost everyone some time.

In fact, given the fact that you have an extra 6 weeks or so training after Connemara, I'd say anything under 1:33/1:34 and you could be confident of giving a 3 hr a good go.

If you do 1:20 in Connemara, I'd be betting on you to go sub 2:50 in Edinburgh. Easily.

I'd echo that. I'm signed up for Edinburgh. I'd have a shot at sub 3 too but I'll decide after Rotterdam what kind of training schedule I'll do between events. I might be happy to do the minimum possible and get my life back to normal after the intensity of the Rotterdam training.

I ran Edinburgh 2 years ago. I wasn't in particularly good state then and it was very hot. Suffered in the closing miles as a result. That won't happen this year. Its a nice route though and a great weekend.

I ran 1:26 in the Glengarriff Bantry half which is hilly but not quite as severe as Conn is at times (i.e. the start and Maam).

Cheers lads for the replies, Euchrid so basically anything under 1.30 would set me up for a sub 3hour, would luv to get around the 1.20 in Connemara, I'll give it a good shot weather permitting and how I feel on the day. Hopefully there will be no strong winds on the day off the Edinburgh marathon and get this sub3 in the bag ;) with Slogger Jogger

As I said, everyone is different and all sorts can go wrong on the day, but in my opinion a sub 1:30 in Connemara would leave anyone well set up for a sub 3 in Edinburgh.

A lot of people say you need to be able for a 1:20 half to go sub 3 in a full, but my half pb is somewhere just under 1:25 (On an easier course then Conn) and I've gone sub 3 more then once. I had a bad day in Edinburgh, running into a strong headwind for the entire 2nd half back to Musselborough, without a watch because I'd forgotten the damn thing and I came in at 3:02. I wasn't even trying for a sub 3 as I hadn't the training done and I honestly had no clue how long I'd been out there until the last km. The only clock I saw on the course was at the 10km marker as I missed the half clock and any others that may have been on the course.

One thing in Edinburgh is probably not to go off too fast, my 10km pb was the first 10km of Edinburgh!, which probably explains some of the pain towards the end!

    Good luck with both...

I never would have thought that edinburgh was such a fast marathon. I remember being there back in last august and walking upto castle I was covered in sweat from the hike

I know Edinburgh fairly well and before the marathon I couldn't imagine a fast course either. But it starts close to city centre on top of a hill and then winds its way out of town, down by Leith and off out along the coast. You never see Princes St, the castle or the Royal mile type areas at all. It's nearly a country marathon for lots of it as you run out the coast, fields on one side and the beach on the other.

Euchrid thanks for the insight information did'nt realize it was so flat. I was going to do some hill training but I might substitute this for more speed work tempo and interval traing, roll on may31st really looking forward to it.

I'm heading to Edinburgh as well. It'll be my first attempt at a marathon and am aiming for a time under 3.45. Really looking forward to it now.

Has anyone looked at accomodation for the weekend? It seems to be booking up fast. We looked at a few apartments and most were either booked or a bit too expensive.

Hi, I'm running the Edinburgh Marathon aswell. It will be my 2nd marathon after Dublin last year. I am going with my wife and son and we are staying in the Royal Mile Apartments, self catering. It is going to cost us £110 per night and we are staying for 3 nights. I think the website I used to find the apartment was called Edinburgh Self Catering. The email address for the company is info@edinburghselfcatering.co.uk.

    Hope this helps

mp1972 the start of the marathon is on Regent road, I have attached a pic, would'nt imagine its more than 10minutes away. The finish line is at musselbourgh race course

Thanks. I really have to book my accommodation, the expense of hotels was putting me off. Think I'll book into Walton looks like a nice place.

+1 on that description. When I ran it, we had a 25mph headwind from mile 9 to 16, but the actual course is completely flat apart from a big downhill from the start to three miles. I ran back up those three miles recently, and it's a long drag up, so it's quite easy to get a bit carried away in the first 20 minutes of the marathon.

FWIW, I reckon Connemara is about 2-3 minutes slower than a flat marathon, and that a 1:23 half marathon will get you under 3 hours for the marathon if you do the distance training, so if you can do 1:26 at Connemara, you'll be well on target.

Here's the elevation profile for the marathon:

    2009courseprofilebig.jpg

My target is 3:07:30, but I'm hoping to go as close to three hours as I can. I'm really looking forward to it, as I can't really get too excited about Connemara, as I'm pacing a friend so won't be looking for a PB. More of a get-around and enjoy it experience.

I was looking for a hotel very close to the start (Kick-off - 9am) , but they're nearly all booked out (including Jurys), so found the Macdonald Holyrood, very near the start, and has a pool for afterwards! Double / Twin rooms around £120 p/n.
