So as we are in a recession the ability to get and use things cheaper is a big plus. This got me thinking, what is the cheapest car to own and run.

This thread is inspired mainly by the recession buster vehicles thread where there were some very nice cars going for decent money, luxomabarges.

So if you get hit in a big way by the recession and have to buy a car which is extremely cheap to run what would it be?

Taking initial price, fuel bill (mpg), tax, insurance and repairs (read reliability) etc into account then what you you buy?

Obviously as this is a forum for people who like cars, so I assume you would try and get the best "drive" for your money too.

I've been thinking of selling my car to buy a Fiat Grande Punto or maybe even a Panda - to get me though for a while...

Was surprised by the prices on Carzone though - was expecting them to be alot cheaper...

a charade... 60+ mpg, doesnt break... cult status ( the older ones... epic motor )

can be picked up for 1-200 quid with an nct... though the 3 cyl engine isnt the fastest engine ever their light so nippy enough when your alone.

Yeah the initial price of a low running cost vehicle would probably depress me.

I have a car with 192k on the clock which will need replacing in the next 2 years I'd imagine so this thread might throw up some good results for me.

The obvious that pop into my head are micras, yaris etc etc

Very true but not the most convenient of vehicles to own is a motorcycle, falls down a bit on flexability. Not saying I wouldn't like one but if you need a very cheap all rounder a bike is cheap but not an all rounder

What do people think of things like the daewoo matiz and opel corsas and the likes?

Skoda Fabia, 00s and 01s with low mileage are averaging around €2,500. And these are 1.4l engine models as well so won't be an embarrassment on the motorway.

    This too shall pass.

I would never recommend a Matiz to my worst enemy. Mate went through 3. Never learned only kept buying them because trade in and couldnt shift it himself. Went through 3 clutch cables on one of them alone.

Got a new one as a rental recently. Chevrolet Matiz. Such a dire drive i was saddened by it and frankly felt a bit unsafe.:o

Something along the lines of a charade or a swift. even mazda 121 / 323F

I have a Matiz, it is not that cheap to keep in the road that you might think. Finding parts is always a problem, car is pain to fix (since it is so small), handling is completely awful and it is not even economical (7l/100km). I seriously think that Matiz is worst car in the road you can buy.

I think that cheapest car to keep in the road would be a under 1.0l petrol car, something you can buy under 2k.

Yaris would be the best choice or maybe old Starlet.

I don't think diesel would do the trick, because road tax is so high.

Any mk2 golf non gti. Cheap to run, cheap to maintain, cheap to tax, cheap to insure, and really easy to work on. And with bullet-proof west german teutonic reliability!

Citroen bx. If you can find the turbo diesel one, get it. Fantastic car with savage brakes
