The GP4000s and the newer GP4000 have a different rubber compound, marketed as "Black Chilli" that is apparently much better. The original GP4000, the coloured ones, got very mixed reviews.

Are you saying that I shouldn't get red GP4000 that will match my red bike?

Exactly, the black chili is what makes the tyre so good

Cyclesuperstore have Ultremos, Pro Light 3s and 4000 for euro 50 for 2.

By the way, I hear Vittoria Rubino Pro are pretty good as well .. and come in Red .. I have them on order from PBK .. cheaper than 4000 and will drop an update later on how they fare.

I cycled on both 4000 and 4000s's last year. The 4000s is a better tyre, but in the wet both tyres are not very good. I have been running on Pro3 Races(colour choice also) this year, a far better tyre than the 4000 series IMO.

I have been riding on the Black Chilli compound one and gotta say they have taken some hammering on the roads I ride and have a leech like effect even thru mud,wet or whatever lies on the roads of North County.

I'm reading that these tires are both good and bad in the wet?

No expert myself but this guy looks like he knows what he is talking about.

Worst Tire in the Rain: Continental Grand Prix 4000: I read all the hype on these and got a pair to check them out. The traction was good (not great) on dry roads, but they were TERRIBLE in the wet.

Not sure if thats the Black Chilli he is talking about but if it is I disagree with him.Even after the guts of 1000miles since mid Dec the 1st one is still running great with only 1 puncture* and that was on the rollers (must have been a bit of crap that got pushed in).

    * ah jaysus I just poxed meself now havent I

This the one I am on about

I have never ever in all my years heard of anyone getting a puncture on a turbo or rollers. Thats embarassing

I am a big fan of Ultremos myself- is this a special offer? I normally pay €55 for 2 Ultremos from CSS.

I am pretty sure I heard it happening to someone else around here also. There could be something already in the tyre. Alternatively could be overheating on a non-trainer specific tyre?

I have the 4000s on my focus and had them on the langster for a good while, and never had a problem in the wet, but then I wan't racing, so maybe at the limits of grip they underperform?

+1 -- I ride GP4000s and they work fine. I was told they were more puncture resistant and since buying them I have had only a few punctures in 4 months and I ride my Scott often --- even through snow.

In saying that I have found my gatorskins feel better when descending at speed.

I can only compare them to the Hutchinson Equinox that the bike came with..... they were awful 4 punctures in 2 weeks.

Yes .. they have the pro light 3s, ultremos and 4000s in huge baskets near the front left hand of the shop .. all for 50euro for 2 ... though the price of 1 varies from 30 - 35euro each depending on whcih one you get ... no loyalty discount on top of this though ... :)

By the way, the only reason I went in is because I saw them on offer 2 weeks back .. didn't think I would need them this quickly but I had a blowout yesterday and was desparate.

The ultremos are obscenely light compared to the gatorskins I was running previously .. though the gatorskins had wire beads. I am thinking if I should cancel the order for vittoria rubino pros from PBK and just get a couple more ultremos ...

I know its fairly embarrasing alrite.I didnt even find anything in the tyre when I took it off

That is strange, the general consensus would be that the 4000 has better grip and I'd reckon this myself (GP4000 came on my new road bike.)

Now that you say it maybe they are a bit too leechy for going downhill.Always feel like something is holding me back.Though its good to know that the tyre is gonna hold up in corners etc when trying to get over 40mph.

As I can't compare on the same bike I can't say the its not the bike that feels better.
