Hey guys just wondering whats the best route to monaghan from dublin. Google shows to go the M1 and branch off. would the N2 not be quicker?

M1 is quicker. The N2 is largely parellel to the M1 until the exit for the N33. As well as that the N2 is single carriageway after Ashbourne.

So head up the M1 and take the exit for Ardee, N33, which is also signposted for Derry (N2).

routing programs tend to automatically favour routes with more motorways than the "draw a straight line from A to B method".

Google is a little short on optimisation options. If you try a different route planner like via michelin you can choose whether you want the route chosen by the quickest route or the shortest distance wise or most scenic or most economical.
