Are there any regulations about running a cafe from your own home? i.e. room large enough to hold about 10 tables, tons of parking (10+ cars) bathroom facilities etc.

What adjustments would you have to make to your kitchen, if any?

It would be just snacks, not meals. just soup/sandwiches, home baked cakes/bread, tea/coffee/hot chocolate etc. that sort of thing.

If anyone has any experience of doing this, any info appreciated. Thanks.

Just ring your local health board and ask them to come out.

They'll tell you everything that they will require you to do

On top of that, which is hard enough, you have to change your planning status. And with that, you have to fulfill handicap facilities, which means construction........ etc. etc. Live isn't easy isn't it! Cheers Oliver

You need the health inspector on board asap.
Regarding planning you will need to apply for cahnge of use.
I think you might not need disabled toilets as it is not a new build.(not 100% sure)
You will need a fire cert and exit lighting, along with fire alarms.
As its part of your home you will have to slab the walls/ceiling to give a better fire rating.
You will pay comercial rates, comercial water rates& waste water rates.
You will need public liability insurance.
A cert form the health board.
Register a business name and get a vat number.
Lots of other little bits im sure but thats enough to start you off

    ...*sigh* or finish you off.

The chances are the EHO will want you to kit out the kitchen in stainless steel and the walls will need to be a "clean washable surface" (usually means fully tiled or stainless steel sheets). Don't forget extraction. Your normal cooker hood won't do.

I've been told by a woman who supplies me with home made bread that she is constantly hounded by the local EHO. It seems the EHO told her that she regards home based food businesses as a much higher risk than a "normal" one. Lots to consider and weigh up here.
