Dr. Loosen Riesling (German). Widely available. Medium sweet. Maybe eleven quid. Lowish alcohol.

Any type/brand of ice wine is very sweet but also very expensive and rare. Grapes don't freeze like they used to so ice wine isn't made as much as it used to so the price has gone up. I was able to get some at a discount once though when I went to a winery in Germany as part of a bus tour.

South African sweet wines are reliable and great value. Considering how much chenin blanc they produce it shouldn't come as a surprise.

Where are you based? Different people mean wildly different things when they say "sweet", but I'm assuming you're not talking about a proper dessert wine.

Go to any place that has a decent German selection (not so easy in itself!). Their bottles are easy to spot as they're very tall and green, and the label might be difficult to understand. Check the alcohol level on the label; if it's between about 8% and 11% it's almost certainly sweet-ish, as not all of the grape sugar has been converted into alcohol.

Alternatively just go into a specialist wine shop where the person there should be able to direct you to what you're looking for.

Agreed. Loosen is good. Should be able to get it from an independent wine merchants.

New Zealand Riesling is among the world's best now. I would recommend Waipara Springs, and if you want to step it up, check out the Muddy Water James Hardwick Riesling. 5 Stars in Decanter, and it absolutely rocks!

In Germany, Dr Wagner of the Saar is every bit as good as the New Zealand Rieslings. He's one of the best German Riesling producers. Loads more on the website.

    Have you tried rose?

I find white too harsh but i love me rose! White zifandel is a fave of mine at the mo and lidl and aldi do nice ones for bout €6 -

DOnt get one with too high an alco content - what ive found it makes the wine slightly harsher to my sweet tastes!!

Tesco have Galleo(probably spelt it wrong) on sale most of the time and any time im having people over for dinner and i know there's someone who doesnt really like wine ill buy that, its basically just an achoholic grape juice nothing special but does the trick, about 9% alc by volume.
