ok i'm new to flight simulators. had some money over the christmas so i bought flight simulator x and its acceleration pack. i don't have a joystick or any of the proper accessories. i'm trying to fly with the directional buttons. i can take off and land and have recently got used to using the gps.

my problem is trying to level out the plane, if i need to turn it turns too far, then i press the opposite direction to try level it out but the plane just goes into a swaying from side to side motion. how do you level the plane out when you have turned as much as you want to??

and also how can you download and install liveries for free, aer lingus and ryanair liveries and all??

The simple truth is you're not going to be able to fly properly with the keyboard alone, you've got to get yourself a joystick! I remember using the keyboard when i first got flight sim back in 1993 and it was a joke. Joysticks are essential, or even the mouse would be better then the keypad.

As regards liveries there's tons of them on www.avsim.com or www.flightsim.com. Search for the airline/plane you want and download the zip file. In it you'll find a readme with instructions on how to install the livery/plane into flight sim.

Its pretty easy you just put certain files into your c:\fsx\simobjects\aircraft folder and it works. It will have instructions with whatever you download. Ask back here if you run into problems. :)

You can pick up a cheap joystick and you will definitely enjoy it a lot more.
I bought a fairly basic one in Argos when I started (think about 20 euro) and it had basic functions. After a few months I picked this up in Maplins in Blachardstown for ~€30. It has a twisting handle for rudder control which is useful, especially if you plan on flying helicopters. Also has a 'hat' switch which is great for changing views and looking around the aircraft.

To add to pclancy's links, I also use www.fsdownload.com and www.fsdome.com (links for -Aerlingus & Ryanair) You can search by airline on the fsdome site.

Im also unsure of differences between installation file locations, but my flight sim is at c:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\fsx\simobjects\aircraft rather than c:\fsx\simobjects\aircraft, but it may vary between computers.

    Best of luck

Yep quite correct, i just happen to have fsx in that folder, the default is as per Stees post.

Its a pretty handy job to install new planes and scenery, just read the instructions properly.

As far as I can remember, the keyboard arrows move the controls incrementally (at least I think thats the word!). So, if you bank left by pressing the left button 6 times, you'll need to level by pressing the right button 6 times, whereas a joystick will reset itself to centre.

The problem with the keyboard is you tend to keep buttons pressed to turn, and therefore you need to know your key repeat rate to work out how many times the computer has pressed the button for you while holding it. Basically, its not worth the headache! You can use the keyboard for other functions you don't assign to the joystick though, such as reverse thrust, auto-spoilers etc. etc.

Get a nice joystick with plenty of buttons and you'll be flying!
    Sorry, Ill get me coat

ive been using a keyboard on FS for years and even on FSX. Havent got around to getting a joystict yet. It is possible to fly easily enough using the cursor keys but only on light single engined aircraft. Next to impossible with any sort of a jet. the key is to just take it easy and single tap the buttons to keep things smooth. I mostly fly 747's and A330's which means the autopilot is on from the moment the wheels leave the tarmac until they are back onto it again. Looks like i better invest in a joystick too.

Just out of curiosity what do you find better about 2004 than FSX? Have you owned the two? Im asking because Ive always used FSX and find it excellent. Am I missing something in 2004? Convince me to try it out

I've used both... FSX is better, provided you have the hardware to run it at a decent frame rate....

Having said that.... there are a lot more add ons for FS2004 than FSX... but thats still changing

    1 alot more add ons
uses alot of space on computer
graphics are way better on it if u dont have a super computer
there both way better then previous one s but fsx has a lot of bugs and i it has broken on me 3+times before

It uses a lot more space, thats true....

    But with SP1 & 2 you'll find its far superiour to FS2004....

+ not really sure which bugs you refer to.... I know one I have is changing tasks were it won't maximise again...
