Delia's How to Cook is the bible, her recipes are clear and always work.

Don't know if it is still in print but I have an old copy of 'Good Housekeeping' cookbook which is basic but comprehensive. Straightforward and slightly old fashioned but plenty of healthy food and easy to read.

Jamie Oliver's books are good and his recipes work well, have alook and see which one suits what you would like to cook.

Finally I haven't tried it but heard that the MABS family cookbook is OK and is free here -> http://www.mabs.ie/publications/Resources%20for%20education/101_Sq_Meals.pdf

If you cook meat, then Hugh Wattlybottom Smythe's River Cottage Meat Book will never go out of fashion and covers all the basics and classics. It's an amazing book as it teaches you about meat as well as giving really good recipes and lots of them. Can't recommend this book enough.
(ok, his name is really Hugh Farnley-Whittingstall)

Leith's cookery bible. It's massive and has everything.. Leith's also do a cooking "techniques" bible and several other books - they're big and expensive, but worth it.
