working in the public sector

    Hi,
I did an exam for clerical officer last August & scored a fairly high mark on it.
I'm just wondering if anyone could give me an idea on whether or not I'll get called with a job offer.
I know I'm probably grasping at straws but I've been out of work since September, not by choice, & I'm finding it really difficult to get an interview nevermind a job.
Would be grateful for any advice. Thanks.

Well done on doing well in the exam.
Unfortunately- I wouldn't hold any great expectation of recruitment happening imminently, the government finances are shot and they are in the process of announcing voluntary redundancy schemes (200 announced in Teagasc today for example) in some state agencies and transfer of staff from others.
I know its tough out there- do hang in there though- there is going to be an interesting announcement on job creation at the Fianna Fail Ard Fheis by the Tanaiste on Saturday.

    Thanks Shane,

I worked in one of the departments as a temporary co & I loved it so that's why I'd really like to join the public sector. It was just bliss to be handed a bundle of work & being left to get on with it.
Ah well hopefully this announcement on Saturday will help me gain employment. I've lost track of the amount of jobs I have applied for & I can count on one hand the amount of acknowledgements I got back.
Thanks again for your advice Shane.

    Hi,
In the same boat as you, ive been working on a temporary basis for the last 9 months around in civil service. Done the exam and scored high.

I spoke to publicjobs.ie they said they are still on the last panel. Once that is finished our panel will be used to fill vacancies as they arise and cant be filled my moving current staff around. They have not even done any interview for that exam yet. So I would not hold your breath.

Yeah I got the same response but something has to come up. In theory it sounds like a good idea to move people from different departments but in reality I don't think they can make someone transfer unless they want to. It's like the whole decentralisation arguement all over again. While it suits some it won't suit others.
Chief commissioner Fachtna Murphy did a press release to the papers recently & he spoke about how some 2500 civilians working in garda offices have aided gardai in completing paper work in order for them to be out doing they're jobs instead of getting caught up in administration.
Apparently there won't be any more garda recruits taken on until 2011/2012 due to cutbacks. And in addition to rising crime & cutbacks on overtime for guards I'm guessing (& hoping) more administration staff will be needed in garda stations across the country. So keep an eye out.
I personally would love a job like that because I looked into entering the guards but I honestly don't think I'd have the patience for the abuse targeted at them.
Walk down any street on a Saturday night after a nightclub & the way some people attack them verbally & physically is disgusting.
