Check this out!. Volvo have decided to put a 107bhp 1.6 diesel engine into the S80 and V70! What in the name of god are they thinkin! A 107bhp engine in a car the size of a 5 series! Probably even worse that theyre puttin it into the V70! I once drove a mazda 3 with this exact engine and i thought it was lukewarm performance at best. Imagine what it'd be like in a V70! A car used by people to carry big loads. Cant wait to see the performance figures!

What is the point of a 2wd XC70, I wonder?

ah well ...my 1.6 TD gives 69 bhp and 140 NM ...for 2.4 tons gross vehicle weight :D

(yes, it does actually move )

BMW did something similiar in the early nineties with the 518i. That car actually sold quite well, even in germany. And mechanics loved them, because they were so easy to work on......lots of room in the engine bay:D

BMW could bring out a 518d with 140bhp, and it'd still be fine IMO. Under 110bhp is just takin the piss though!

    Trust me, it will sell.

Saw it earlier and actually laughed. Driving it in an s40 i thought it was grand but nothing more, but an s80? Would it even be economical in real life with all that weight to lug about because the claimed figures are usually a load of bull anyway. If priced right could make a good taxi i suppose...

I saw that earlier and when I first saw the headline I thought they were going to do something along the lines of a twin-turbo small capacity diesel, I was amazed to see that they were slotting this in such a large and heavy car. Needless to say it will be a roaring success in this country.

Twin turbo 1.6...now that'd be sweet! I can see it doing pretty well. The 2.0d is well priced as it is for the type of car so this should be a lot of car for the money. I reckon my dad'd love it...

Well people don't have to buy it. In fact I hope they don't, but it is good to give people the option.

Probably just a Paddy C02 / VRT special?

It did sell well but it had more power and it was lighter than the car in the OP. And entry level models of prestige badges always sell well. And it was 20 years ago.

And to put things into perspective, the S80 with 107BHP has a better power to weight ratio than the ever so popular brand new Skoda Octavia 1.4 (80BHP), and I'm not even mentioning the usability of the turbo diesel torque at low revs for day to day driving...

If most of your "driving" is done crawling in the daily commuter traffic jam over long distances, something like this could actually be a clever choice.

All the creature comforts of a big car at a fraction of the (running) cost. It'll keep up with the rest of the crawling traffic no problem, despite the smaller engine.

It's worth noting that the latest S80 is based on the current Mondeo which ships with a 1.6 108bhp normally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.8 TDCI with just 98bhp (although there is also a 123bhp version of the 1.8 TDCI too). The 1.6D in the S80 should offer better performance than either of these engines in the Mondeo, in fact, there would probably be a big demand for a 1.6 TDCI in the Mondeo.

It would actually make sense as a taxi, more sense than a twenty year old Corolla, and those Vovo S80 seats are damn comfortable, I only find the dashboard in them a bit too grey to be honest.

Jeeeez - Me and a collegue were dropping a Trafic van to someone recently - he in the Trafic and me behind in an S40 1.6D. On the straights he was pulling away from the Volvo so I hate to think how bad that engine would be in the S80/V70.

The 2.0i V70 i drove needed the neck rung off it to make decent progress
