Maybe this is a naive question but is it acceptable to bring a suit as carry on with Ryanair?

I'm assuming yes but just double checking.

Yes, but the more picky UK airports may stop you at the gate if you have the suit and another carryon bag as well. I just had to roll it up a bit and make it look as if it was "inside" my carryon bag as I went through the gate area.

Friend of mine was charged 30 euro as his suit was counted as his second piece of carry on baggage (he couldn't fit it in his carry on bag) so be careful.

Thanks, I have a check in as well so I'll stick with the suit as my only carry on as I will be catching a flight from within the UK as well and they are strict as hell.

Had no hassle recently in Dublin, but have had issues a couple of times in the UK.
