    Hellas Online builds optical network with Cisco Monday 23 February 2009 | 10:32 AM CET


    Hellas Online has awarded a contract to Cisco to use its equipment to build a nationwide optical transport network in Greece. The network has been designed and implemented by Intracom Telecom and employs Cisco optical networking and routing equipment over an IP network architecture. Hellas Online's proprietary fibre-optic network currently extends to more than 3,500 km nationwide, enabling the company to offer residential voice and data services. Hellas Online has deployed the Cisco ONS15454 Multiservice Transport Platform in the core and aggregation networks, supporting 40 Gbps wavelengths and offering the flexibility to make dynamic changes and expansions to the topology of the network. The Cisco Ethernet 15454 ONS Xponder line card technology used by Hellas Online in the DSL aggregation network helps the company to preserve scarce wavelength resources, by allowing multiple DSL access sites to be connected to the IP core network using a single wavelength.

    If I'm not mistaken, isn't this just backhaul, with the last mile still to be covered by DSL? I'm sure it's far more advanced than Eircom's backhaul, but still not quite like the sort of plans we're seeing in Finland and Korea.
