Car taxation question

    Hello,

I am bit confused here so hopefully someone can help me...

I recently started driving my moms old car, she hasn't driven it for a couple of years since buying a new one. Now I want to get it taxed....so when I go down to the tax office will I have to prove that it has been off the road(without tax) for a couple of years? How will I do that?

Also as it has been taxed previously is this the form I need to fill out:

    https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/RF100A_en.pdf

Do you need to have passed your NCT to get a car taxed, looks like you do going on this form. We are in process of getting the car registered in my name if that makes any difference.

Go to your local Garda Station with the car details, they will have the form you need, and they will stamp it.

You need to go to your local Garda station where you declare that the car has been parked up and they then sign a form to this effect. I know the Motor Tax office say on their website(s) that you need a valid NCT but to be honest I've never been asked for anything other than my insurance details.

I would get the insurance transferred, then book an NCT, pass it and on the first day of the month get your form stamped and tax the car from that day onwards. The first day of the month means that if you went in today with your form from the Gardai, you'll still have to pay tax from February 1st even though you haven't been using the car, so always do this early in the month.

    HTH.

Do you not need to prove that the car has been off the road or will they just take your word for it? Also not sure exactly how long it has been out of tax. Or to be more precise, my dozy mom is!

Find out when the last time it was taxed, then tell the guards it has been off the road since, they will believe you :)

you have changed ownership so it wont matter about time off road.you will only be taxing it from date of purchase onwards. You can do it on line no problem.
    all the best

    .

When I went to get my car re-taxed after it being off the road for three months, I had an NCT but wasnt sure which collection of numbers on the disc was needed for the purpose of filling out the form. So I brought the disc along in my pocket to ask the girl which number it was and before I could get it out of my pocket, she said to me, "Ah we dont check any of that to be honest"

But I would get it NCT'd if I were you anyway, you will get caught without it, and that is backdated.

But this only works if you are changing ownership via the log book. If you don't send off the log book and officially get the car in your name, then you will have to declare it off the road

I am getting it changed into my name alright, my mom has sent off the forms so I should have that soon. Then its just a matter of heading down to the tax office which will be pain in the arse!

    Thanks for all the advice.

Well as the others have said, seeing as the ownership has been changed, all you will have to do is go to the tax office, rather than a trip to the garda station and then to the tax office :)
