I have a 220px by 55px image and need to split it into 4 55px by 55px images. Is there an easy way to do this?

    Ctrl+R to turn on rulers

Right click on a ruler and change units to pixels

Drag a ruler bar from the vertical ruler (click anywhere and drag to the right) to 55 pixels on the top horizontal ruler
    Repeat for 110px and 165px

Use the crop tool which will snap to corners, image edges, and ruler bars

Crop the first image, then save as, to a new file.
    Undo the crop

Crop second image, then save as, to a new file.
    Undo the crop

Repeat for 3rd and 4th image.

There's probably a command for all this, but this is how i've always done it!

Damn, found a much quicker and easier (and more accurate) way to do it

Hold down the crop tool button and choose slice tool.
Change style to fixed slice, and enter 55x55px in the top dialogue box
Click your images into 4 slices
    Then choose save for web
It will save each image into a folder where you choose...
