    What model? What year?

1996 to 2004 S40 was based on the Mitsubishi Carisma and the 1.9 TD engine is a Renault unit. Pre 2001 models had 100bhp, facelifted 2001 diesel had 115bhp.

2004 onwards S40 is based on the Ford Focus and the diesel engines are Peugeot/Citroen HDi units, comes in 1.6 litre (110bhp) and 2.0 litre (136bhp).

    hi

for me the S60 is superior - the S40 is a little small. Also look at V50 if its an estate!

S60 diesel only comes with a 2.4 diesel engine so road tax is ridiculous - although it is a cracking engine.

I was looking to buy an S40 diesel, but yesterday was offered a 2001 S40 petrol engined 1.8 for a fantastic price. Took it for a test drive, seemed fine, had a mechanic friend give it a quick look over and all seemed fine.
My only query/worry is this: I've always owned diesel engined cars (Renault and a few VWs) and before I take what seems a great offer, I'd like to know if the S40 will be expensive to run, what sort of mileage to the gallon could I resonably expect etc.

    Thanks for any help...

The '01 is supposed to be fairly unreliable, check out honest john etc.

You'll be lucky to get 35mpg out of it..
