What sort of car did you buy? Most newer cars come standard with an immobiliser and deadlocking. In some cases an alarm can be simply overkill.

I wouldn't do that. Most main dealers subcontract alarm fitting. So if you do have to have an alarm then you'd be much better off dealing directly with the subcontractor. There are one or two exception to this which is why the make and model of the OPs car would help.

    4 YOOOR EVOOO!????

op try clifford alarms. Expensive but it'll definatly keep your car where you left it :) What car you buy?
As others have said, all modern cars (after 1995) had immobilisers of some sort

clifford alarm for your civic was it?????
falcon evo alarms are good imo

cliffords are over rated imo, i know of a few cars with cliffords that have all been stolen!
any alarm is only as good as the installer.

as asked above, what car is it?
what kind of coverage do you want?

do you want basic on/off alarm?
    tilt/motion/proximity sensors etc etc required?

The electrics will probably blow if you put on an alarm! :D
Ah honestly though, is it for peace of mind or do you honestly fear it will be stolen. You could be looking at between €100 - €200 for a half decent alarm (ie will go off if someone robs it) If you want something that shuts down the engine, 'pages' you and has more sensors, expect at least double the higher figure.

yeah just for peace of mind. closest il ever come to owning a sports car!

2002 Megane. No need for an alarm. It has an immobiliser. Anything else just offers a siren if someone breaks the window. Don't waste your money on an alarm.

This is one of the most stupid comments i think i've ever read on boards!

You go onto any car forums out there, such as www.dtdirl.com and when you see how many cars are going missing are going missing, every bit of security you can put on your car is money well spent

yeah to many cars are being nicked, and if someone breaks your window and a really really loud alarm goes off and the hazards flash etc, what are the chances there goin to start trying to hotwire it?!
plus even a red led flashing is a deterrent,

i know a lot of people dont even notice alarms, but because my car has one if any alarms go off in my street i'l go outside and check whats going on,

There is just this idea going around that sooooooooooo many people believe that once your car has an immobiliser that it is safe, and it's so wrong!

At the end of the day, if a pro wants your car, no matter what security you have, they will take it, even if they have to resort to breaking into your house for the keys!

But as for the smaller petty thieves, the more security you have the less likely it will be that they will try rob your car. If you have an immobiliser, a good alarm (maybe with proxy sensors), a steering wheel lock and make it obvious that there is nothing in the car to steal (i.e. leave open the glovebox), they will just move onto the next car that is an easier target cos it has less security!

If your car is required then the thief will enter your house and take the keys. An alarm is simply that - an Alarm. 99% of alarm installers do not wire the immobiliser circuitry of the alarm - they leave immobilisation to the factory innstalled system. So all you're buying is a siren. With or without that siren, the car cannot be taken without the keys (or a tow truck).

Don't waste your time with an alarm. If you're concerned about the car being taken then get a tracking system.

There are some excellent car security systems out there but anything decent would be overkill for a 2002 Megane.

You really want to get into your head that just cos a car has an immobiliser does NOT mean it is safe

    Agreed.

But, as you stated earlier, if a pro wants it, he'll take it no matter what security you have.

Don't leave anything of value on display inside the car. That and the immobiliser is enough to deter the petty thief. A petty thief won't get around the immobiliser. No need for an alarm. Remember that what I'm saying is based on the OP's 2002 Megane - not a 2009 Porsche. The OP would probably be better off ensuring that his insurance has no claims protection to cover him in the event that he should be the victim of petty crime rather than fitting an alarm.

That's my 2c and I'll stick to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,673 ✭✭✭bladebrew

i still think an alarm will give some comfort to the owner, how is a petty thief supposed to know which car has an immobiliser or not?
if it has a red flashing led up on the dash there hardly going to break the window to see what happens!

as crosstownk said if they really want a car they will get it,and i doubt a 2002 megane coupe is on a shooping list for scumbags (no offence op!) but an alarm will at least deter joyriders,

I'll add this finally : If an alarm buys you some peace of mind and helps you sleep while your car is unattended then get one fitted. I'd hate to see anyone have a sleepless night. If the alarm wakes you from your slumber what will you do? Will you rush down and confront the thief and risk his retaliation? Will you call the Gardaí and wait while the thief makes off with your stereo? Now not only has your car been broken into but your sleep has been disturbed. Cynical, but true :D

Apart from the owner of the vehicle, most people will simply walk past a squealing alarm without a second glance. At best it will get the "noise pollution" stare.

Lads telling someone not to get an alarm isnt very nice. What if that poor persons car is taken on them what are they going to think of all the advice they got saying dont get an alarm.

Alarms come in many different types and if installed correctly there should be peace of mind along with it.

Every car should have an alarm and just because it comes with a factory fit immobiliser and remote central locking its not necessarally safe.

What if someone wants to get in and steal your stereo, your handbag your laptop even if you dont leave these things in your car that doesnt mean someone isnt going to get into your car and look for these things.

You would be amazed how much of a deterrant the blue light and window stickers are.

Its your car dont take chances remember famous last words.... it wont happen to me!

first thing you buy for your car nowadays is an alarm.

Sure, if you're driving a turbo nutter Jap import. As crosstownk keeps telling you all, however, a 2002 Megane coupe has a factory immobiliser and simply doesn't need an alarm. All the OP would be doing is unnecessarily spending money to tear into the wiring of the car.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 CarAlarms.ie

    I agree.

Car alarms now are specifically designed for the car they are going on. IE if you have a vw golf 2009 you get an alarm which is specifically designed for that car and once installed it will not work on any other car.

Alarm manufacturers make alarms that work on new cars CAN BUS (Multiplex wiring system) they integrate nicely into the vehicles original circuitry.

If manufacturers didnt want alarms on cars they wouldnt have them as optional extras. In many cases an alarm installed by a certified installer will reduce insurance premiums.

Sorry, but with a username like that I'll assume you're biased and have a vested interest in alarm installations/sales - no offence intended.

As for laptops, handbags, etc, I doubt too many opportunist thieves would break in on spec - they'll move on to the next car/opportunity. Keep your car tidy from a petty theft point of view - make it less attractive to the thief than other cars.

I've had plenty of cars broken into and various contents stolen. Some of the cars had alarms, some didn't. Both types got broken into and my belongings taken. The real reason is because I was stupid enough to leave 'stealable' items in plain view. Thiefs aren't deterred by alarms. They smash the window and grab stuff whether or not the siren is squaking is the name of the game. On the other hand, the pro thief will politely ring your doorbell and introduce himself with some lethal weapon........... The car is insured and the most you will loose is the policy excess - usually a lot cheaper than the price of an alarm! No claims protection FTW!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,673 ✭✭✭bladebrew

yup i definetly agree with crosstownk on that one,if items are left in view ie. satnavs still mounted on the windscreen!! a thief wont even care about an alarm just smash the window and take off running!

if somone is actually trying to take the car then i think an alarm would be a deterrent,if a joyrider is after an easy car to steal i doubt they would bother with an alarmed car (depending on where it is) being lazy they would pick the easier option:)

And any half decent joyrider will know what makes/models have immobilisers. The joyriders aren't idiots.............

@ crosstownk no offence taken. I just dont think people should take the chance for the sake of a few quid. And alarm or no alarm dont leave stuff on display in your car its just asking for trouble. You would be surprised how many people do it

do you actually want an alarm on your car?
you came on here asking if we think you need one, we told you yes we would recommend you get one.

people tell you that you dont need them and you thank them???? if you dont want one dont get one simple as.

but you need to stop going on about immobilisers as if they are the holy graill, they can be bypassed fairly easily these days.
