I am Catholic and my partner isn't. We are getting married (hopefully) next year in Orlando, Florida. As I am Catholic, we want to get married in a Catholic Church (Of which the Priest has given his permission) I have now been told that I need to write a letter to the Bishop Of Orlando asking for his permission. However.... I'm not sure what to write in the letter??? I've been told it needs to be a detailed letter and am not sure where to start, can anyone help please?!

    This might be a start

    Dear Bishop Bob,
Your grace, recently my fiancé and I decided to get married at X church and approached the priest, a Fr Y asking for him to facilitate the ceremony of marriage. However as my fiance is not a Roman Catholic I was informed that I should write to your grace and ask for a dispensation regarding the celebration of this sacrament.

    ---

Basically you have to know that marraige is a sacrament, that you will be expected to raise the kids as catholics and that you have no right to get married in a church

To avoid asking the permission of someone in another country who does not even know you, and will not ever even meet you, why not get married in some other church rather than a Roman Catholic one ? I think the RC bishops would be better off spending their time sorting out many issues in their own church / their own priests, rather than telling couples one partners religion is not good enough for any kids to be brought up in.

Phototoxin's post would seem like the way to approach it. I'd imagine in the mixing pot that is the states, such a thing is a formality these days.

Perhaps there is a standard format to such requests, I'm sure your local PP would be able to help you word such a request.

It should be pretty similar as Catholic means 'universal' what works in rome works in ireland works in america.

Many thanks for your responses. To answer one of your questions... I am Catholic therefore want to get married in a Catholic Church. I am not interested in anyones views on the Catholic Church, this is my faith and religion. I just wanted some advice on writing a letter.

Thanks to those of you who were helpful :) x
