Thinking of changing my car i currently drive a 1.4 mk4 Golf. What to get a 130bhp diesel mk4 Golf. Rang my insurance company and they said they wont insure me till im 21. Im 20 with 2years ncb and my full licence for over a year. If I just buy this car they have to quote me right? I got a quote from 123.ie for 1600e third party. If worse came to worse i could cancel my insurance as im only paying monthly but iv four more months ncb clocked up and really don't want to lose them. Any advice how to get them to insure it with out them giving me a huge quote just because they have to give me a quote if i own the car.

    Cheers

Does it have to be a golf ?

Seems odd they wont quote, even with 2 years NCB....

think its probably more to do with the cc than the bhp , their obliged to quote if you tell them you have the car bought

Legally, if you buy the Golf 130 they have to quote you. That said, they can quote what they like.

tee he a load of the bikers will be happy . When ya pass test on bike you have to wait two years to drive full power.
Anyways they will give you a huge quote.

i heard somewhere that companies are legally obliged to quote you, is this true? if so some infringements of the law have been made in my direction

Keep the car you have now until you get that extra years ncb.Its not what you want to hear, but its something we have all had to do.

With the way the market is going now, you might get a 170bhp tdi sport for the money you are paying now and with you being 21 and having 3 years ncb ( possibily ncb protection ) you wont have a problem getting insured. Its the right thing to do.

Good advice im 21 in july so its not that far off. Thing is my car i currently have just passed its nct so it might make it some bit easier to sell it now.

Go somewhere else... You shouldn't be told what you can and can't own by an insurance company.

    Try First Ireland I'm 27 and it's not even a grand on a 08 M3.

A clean and well maintained Golf will always sell, you shouldn't have a problem selling it if its priced well. You wont lose that much on it between now and October, but you would lose a small fortune on a 05.Honestly I would wait, this time next year could be a great time to buy.

Whats your budget btw and can you add to it if you wait?

Until you're 23-25, unfortunately you'll have to suck it up somewhat. I paid £2500 at your age TPFT on a Cinquecento Sporting back in the late noughties when insurance prices went bananas, so you're not getting too badly shafted.

Keep building up your NCB and pocket the money to get something really quick and worthwhile when the time comes would be my advice. Also get your Advanced Driving Licence and anything else that might bring your insurance down and your skills up, so that you don't mash a performance car when the time comes to buy one.

Just ring them and tell them you've bought the new car - they'll give you their quote and you can decide whether or not you're happy with it. Mind you, if I were going to be raped i'd want it to be for something a lot better than a mk4 Golf diesel.;)

It's a boat with a tractor engine, that's what it is. Even the 1.8T is a bit of a pig, IMO.:)

It does seem odd that they wont quote you, I'm 22 and drive an '04 A4 1.9TDI 130BHP Sport, I paid €1300 fully comp and only had 1 years NCB in my name (3 years named though) Did you happen to describe it to them as a GT TDI? Give FBD a shout, they discount for diesels.

Before I bought the Audi I was looking for quotes on a MKV Golf GTI and I got one quote for €3300 but no one else would quote me until I'm 25, I wasnt surprised by that but not insuring a 20 year old on a 130bhp Golf is taking the p1ss!

I saved on my premium last month by using quoteclub, it seems to be an independent service to compare prices in Ireland, a few others here seem to have saved also

here;s the address for car insurance

Not necessarily the case - I'm currently insured on a 130bhp car and paying 1600/year since I was 19 - only reason the fee is so high is it's a soft top.
I've been insured on up to 170bhp cars no problem - all with quinn direct.
The trick is tell them you have the car already purchased, and *need* to get insurance. If the operator refuses, ask to speak to a supervisor.
You've purchased the car, paid in full, are about to go to the garage to pick it up - they'll quote you. Stall going ahead with it, tell them you gotta just double check the reg is correct or something - that'll get you your quote. :-)

That would be deliberate non disclosure wouldn't it?

    A really bad idea.

Thats a great way to end up in trouble. IF an accident happens they check the cars for that kind of stuff.
