So you entered a 3000 mile rally without a car?

    Nice.

i would guess standard car insurance wouldn't cover this event as it would fall into the race and reward expemption.

    Is this in europe??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 djtrax2k3

actuallly, myself and 2 other friends entered the race and we had a car, 1 dropped out, then the 2nd (he took his car with him), so basically, i'm still in the race and since i organised it I want to continue with it by finding someone willing.

The race is in Europe yes.
Regarding car insurance we can sort out the insurance required.

If I have a fast car, passport, driving licence, insurance, free in July, etc, and was willing to enter this: why would I enter with someone I don't know, and be stuck with them in a confined space for 6 days? I could just enter with a mate: you could be a weirdo!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 djtrax2k3

fuel will be covered yes. I can assure you i'm not a weirdo, and if you'd like to do it, we'd meet up and go through everything and try to get to know eachother before any involvement to the event.

'Change gear, break, murder a prostitute, change gear' springs to mind in fairness!

Thanks for that, but thats not the case, this is a charity event, i've already put my commitment into it and there's a lot of media exposure and fundraising organised, but I do need to secure a car for the event along with a 2nd driver.

I would love to do it, but I am not sure the other half would go for it. Also, I think they are quite fussy about the cars they let in. I have a decent enough car, and it is reasonably fast, but I am not sure it is Cannonball Run material.

And I think it is a perfectly reasonable request to look for a car and second driver, given the circumstances. I would jump at the chance TBH.

Yeah, I would really love to do it. Lots like a ball. Would not be easy to win it.

It isnt a race as such because you are not allowed race on a public highway.
Having watched it on tv i could not imagine a worse way of spending a week....the average entrant is a f**c*ing idiot.
I can think of better ways to raise money for charity combining an epic journey without all the fools with their money.

I can tick all the boxes, and have done similar trips.

But not sure would the Gumball rally be my thing....pm me details & costs involved

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,754 ✭✭✭Bluefoam

Is the OP talking about the Gumball or Cannonball rally?

Someone should show this to M3 mark, I'd say he'd jump at this.. would be able to get some good publicity also.

why not hire a car?? go to some prestige car hire place in the UK and get one there???

From the site, you dont need a fast or expensive car.. a guy in a smart car won it in 2008!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 djtrax2k3

I cannot hire a car, the car has to be registered this week, including its reg number, if i get a car thats different on the day, i will not be allowed race.

    Fast, expensive, flashy machine!

At £5500stg entry, I'm sure most charities would be happy for that amount alone!

Best of luck finding the crew & car.

Fuel Economy? On the Cannonball run? With the speeds that run does, Fuel Economy really becomes something you stick your fingers in your ears for, and shout LALALALALALALALA. :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 djtrax2k3

well i'm not going to be taking a V8, because i'd have to refuel 5 or 6 times between each stop, and since the fuel is being paid for, i want to reduce the cost as much as possible so the charity gets most of it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,660 ✭✭✭Blitzkrieger

You don't want my car then - 8mpg......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 djtrax2k3

    8mpg!! what is it??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,892 ✭✭✭Kersh

Nor any of mine 8mpg, 12mpg or 13 mpg, :D

Seriously though, no car worth doing it in returns more than 15mpg :D

To stand any sort of chance of keeping up in mid pack of course. Do let us know what you get though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,788 ✭✭✭MrPudding

I can get nearly 30 out of my v8 when I drive nice...

    MrP

OP, you can hop on my back and go "brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrb" with my mouth? I reckon fuel economy will be good. Would be like a convertible smart coupe!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 djtrax2k3

well the car i orignally had was modified, and could push 35 mpg and keep up with the pack.
Listen guys, at this i'm willing to take any offers, i'll be meeting people this friday if anyone is interested PM me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Wow, this looks amazing! £5500 is a fair whack for one person. Or is it £5500 per car? I'd take 3 others with me if it's per car!

EDIT: I've just seen its for one car and two people, hmmmmmmmmmmm....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 djtrax2k3

that price is for 1 car with 2 people, for an additional 3rd person its another 2200pounds.

I worked out that you'd need the guts of €4000 each to do this. I think i'd rather go to America instead, €4000 is a lot for 6 days. If it was half the price, i'd definitely do it.

A big ol' Yank tank. What else? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭jozi

Whats with all the nasty comments, the guy is looking for someone to join him on what could be a once in a life time experience, not your reason why its a stupid idea.

I'd love to do something like this only, being slightly un-employed and car-less doesn't really qualify me for this trip.

Good luck finding someone and with the rally!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 djtrax2k3

Thanks for the support and interest All! I really appriciate it. Basically everything was set to go till the car and driver pulled out. So anyone still interested PM me asap! i'll be holding off to Saturday to find someone willing. Just remember, i'm looking for the time and effort commitment, its for a great cause and its a great experience!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,037 ✭✭✭kuro_man

I have a V8 that will do 30mpg easily at motorway speeds

Love driving journeys but can't see why you'd pay thousands to do it and I suspect the charity thing is a way of covering costs rather than genuine altruism. There are cheaper and more effective ways of raising money.

would love to really, but car value after an event like this would be hit, besides the running costs-new set of tyres, mechanical overhaul......putting me off really

    Nice.

    3000miles .. meh ..

Polish guy I know does this drive every second week:
    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=leiden,+netherlands+to+gdansk,+poland&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=49.223579,79.101563&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=6

He has a 1.9 TDI Passat.

You don't need a super fast car on motorway, a passat will do 180 km/h comfortably, getting between 28 - 34mpg.

Diesel is alot cheaper than the 1.37 /litre on petrol at the moment too.

So, let me get this straight. It's for charity, but you take all the costs out before you give them any money? You don't have a car yourself, or friends, or ANYTHING to bring to this? Why not just ask someone else if they want to do the trip in your place, with their car, and their friends? Surely it's all about the charity, right?

Better idea, how about you just don't bother.

Lads, isn't it about time we had a Walter Mitty sub-forum on Motors?

in response to Gil_Dub, I cannont let someone do it in my place as the entry fee was paid by myself, and therefore the team is my baby. I am responsable for it. But it has come to a stage where I have to pull out of the event due. I appriciate everyone wishing us well and I will continue to raise money for the charity but The Cannonball event will not be happening this year for Team Ireland. Thanks again to every who took an interest!
