Any feed back would be great………

I’m working in a formal wear shop in Dublin, hiring wedding outfits for weddings and tuxedos for balls.
I’m thinking of starting up a mobile formalwear service, which would travel to the bride or groom’s house in order for them to pick out the grooms party’s outfit of there wedding. Allowing the bride and groom to does this in the comfort of there own home (or parent’s home)
The service I would offer would be the exact same as you would get in any formal wear shop. I would have a large selection of suits, waistcoats and plenty of neckwear to match what colour they need. After they pick out the outfit, I would revisit them one month before the wedding to fit the rest of the wedding party (fathers, best man, grooms men and pageboys) The suits would then be delivered to the groom’s home or the parent’s home, 3 days before the wedding for the party to final fit the suits and if there are any problems (which there normally are not) it would be sorted the following day.
Two days after the wedding the suits could be picked up at the hotel or home.
I would also do tux rental for corporate functions, collages balls and school debs where I would fit the person at work or at the school in a free room or hall and deliver the suits the day before the event ,collecting it a day after.
I hope to have a website online and do some wedding fairs to generate business.

Most formalwear shops have there suit priced from 140-190 euro with some offering discount. I was thinking of pricing the suits at 140euro with a 20% discount off the jacket, trousers, waistcoat, and neckwear. The shirt would be a brand new and they get to keep it.
The only problem I think I might have is that people like to go to shops to see the suits.
I’d hope if I got a really professional website done wedding party’s would be in touch and once I made an appointment with them I could show them the range I have and that would give them the confidence to book there suits with me.

Eventually I want to open a shop on the southside of Dublin as I feel there is an opportunity there.

If you could let me know what you think about it and suggestions would be grateful

Sounds like a good idea for sure. IF its cheaper than the shop and you can build a good reputation then you should build a decent business.

i agree, theres nothing more stressful for any bride/debutant/anyone really than running around in the weeks coming upto a big event, you are making this easier for them...image your website like asos.com and and easily remembered domain name and the orders will fly in...easy to use and make sure you get high up in google. Also give leaflets at schools in september, create a bebo and maximise your internet exposurealong with the wedding fairs idea!...one thing i hated was that black-tie thinks it had a monopoly sewn up on the irish market .....sock it to them they have been ripping people off for years!

    best of luck buddy!

ps. your very brave putting up new business ideas...could attract competition aswell as advice!! Not saying fellow boarders are cut throat business heads but...theres alot of redundancy money floating about.sure if i'd ask a mod to close this thread when you've gotten all you want out of it!

There's a certain sub-category in the male end of the market. It's the whythef****doIhavetowearone category. Doing it on sufferance, hate spending the money, don't care about the style. They would be game for the discount and would be delighted NOt to have to go to shop. Also, one standard type is all you'll need. Simple website, one phone call from client. Offer discount to organiser of debs, he'll do the legwork for you.

The only problem I can see is for the customer getting all the people together for a fitting. In my own case it was extremely convenient for the shop to have all the details on file and groups or individuals could drop in at their convenience to whichever shop was closest to them. We had people on both sides of the city as well as Kildare, so for us, your model wouldn't have worked.

    (just something to think about)

    Hi Greg,

I think it's a great idea. I think people that are working will find it a great help. Will you target those in rural areas also or keep it city based?

Good luck with the venture, I've no doubt it would be a success. Another point on advertising I would ask any wedding sites if you could link up with them i.e. wedding planners, wedding invitations sites, etc. Check out www.irishbusinesswomen.com (and yes there are some men on that site too!) it's great for info on setting up new businesses etc.

    Regards,

    Emily

The only way to find out is to go and do it. You know the business of formal wear so give it a go. Good luck.

The other piece of advice I'd offer is to have a very careful look at the labour costs of providing the service - it sounds like a lot with two visits (how long each one?) and a collection and delivery. You will have to see how many of these you can do in a day, they are likely to be clustered around evening times and weekends and you will need to bring a large range of stock with you.

I do think there is something in the idea, but be careful with the actual cost of delivering the service and whether it is a business that can scale beyond you and a van.

    Gool luck!
