I'm considering buying a laser range finder for my retiring boss who is a regular golfer. I'm not a golfer though, and thus have no idea whether these are allowed on Irish courses, or if at all, in what circumstances. As I wish to get him something he can use at least semi-regularily, I was hoping for some advice re their acceptability.

    Hi there,

Easy answer is if you can find out which club he is a member of, you can call them and ask them if range-finders are allowed in that particular club's competitions. It's up to each club to decide for themselves you see, but many do allow them.

Secondly, it seems from general discussions here (and in my own opinion) the GPS gadgets do the same job, without having to point them like binoculars and are preferred to the lazer ones. They basically look like a phone and give a read-out to the front, back and middle of each green from where you are. It changes as you walk. They cost about the same too and I think SureShot seem to be the most popular brand.

However, for the GPS the course in question needs to be on the mapped list. If you know or can find out where he's a member post here and we can help further with the above.
